So, I parked both cars outside in this 100 degree texas weather for an hour and compared the two roofs. The Rivian's roof is so much hotter than the tesla. Are they made by different type of glasses? I'm thinking about tinting the R1s roof but afraid it will trap the heat and crack.

are you measuring temps in the cars? or just feeling the roofs on the outside?

Tesla makes their own glass. I believe the Tesla has IR heat rejection in their glass. Rivian clearly has not much IR heat rejection. I put Llumar Air 80 on all the privacy glass (roof, sides, back) and windshield on the R1S. This seems to have helped cut the heat and reflect the sun away from the car. Will know more with testing :)

I bought a pretty good sun shade for it as my first accessory.

Our Dallas based R1S is getting tint and PPF as I type. According to our tint installer, there is no problem / technical concern with tinting the R1S roof glass. However, we are starting with tinting all the other glass and will bring it back should we find heat from the roof glass bothersome.

I tinted the front windows and windshield and it made a dramatic difference. I still feel it from the roof on full sun 90 degree days, but it's nothing the AC can't take care of.

This is what I did when got the r1s in march. However, i feel that it is still not enough for the texas summer heat. I can definitely feel the heat coming from the sunroof. I parked outside during a sunny 95 degree day for a few hours and take a peak at the cabin temperature. It is at 120 plus . I can't imagine during july and august month will be.

Had a nice conversation with a local (Dallas) owner of an R1S, yesterday. He's owned it for about 2 months and said the heat from the glass roof is noticeable. He plans to get it tinted.

Nothing you do is ever going to avoid that (short of parking in a fully shaded spot). The difference is with tint you're at 120 instead of 140+. The real advantage with the tint is that it reduces the rate of heating. That means a tinted vehicle will be slower to heat up and less work for the AC to get the temp back into the comfort zone and keep it there.

Not saying that tinting the roof will or won't make a noticeable difference (I'm still undecided on this myself), just trying to temper your expectations as to what is possible. If you park in the direct sun for several hours, you're always going to come back to an uncomfortably hot car - even with a solid metal roof. Also keep in mind that one of the really nice features we have is the ability to remote start the AC.

Went for the large RV window shade for the roof. Only looks bad if your looking up at it. It will work until a teal shade is available

The correct way to test this is to leave both vehicles in the sunlight for the same amount of time, and use a solar BTU meter and measure the IR energy passing through the pano roof to the cabin. You cannot measure glass temperatures because each vehicle's glass has a unique composition. Additionally, ambient temperatures in the cabin will be different, due to air volume, interior color, and air leakage.

What you're feeling is the absorbed IR energy (heat) from the tint radiating from the film, into the cabin. High-performance ceramic window film both absorbs and rejects IR energy.
