Rivian Hires Martin Huelder as Vice President, Commercial - Europe

IRVINE, Calif., April 06, 2023--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) today announced it has hired Martin Huelder as Vice President for its commercial division in Europe. Huelder joins Rivian from Mercedes Benz, where he has been for nearly 30 years.

Huelder joined Mercedes-Benz in 1995 and has held several positions at the company. Most recently he was Head of Data Driven Sales and Retail Development. Prior to that, Huelder was Director of Product Management for Large Cars including the S, E, C, GLC and EQC classes. At Rivian, Huelder will oversee the company’s European commercial and go-to-market strategy.

Agree. The timing makes it seem like that as US/Canada R1 backorders are filled through 2023, they will start shipping to Europe to keep the production volume up. Good strategy, and then ramp up Asia/Australia?

After reading about Tesla’s struggles in Asia, I would steer clear if I were Rivian. It’s tempting but the local competition in China seems to always eat American companies alive. I could see Rivian becoming popular in Australia. They do love their performance vehicles there.

Plus Rivian's CFO said in the BoA webcast this week that the R2 platform will be used for global distribution. There was no mention of the R1. I think Rivian wants to start selling EDV's in Europe ASAP.

Agreed. I always thought it was funny that Rivian announced and then backtracked on the Benz EDV partnership relatively quickly.

I'm not sure the R1s would do well in Europe because of space constraints but the EDVs would be a huge hit.
