heh, backpacking I take a deuce trowel, so the shovel and TP sounds luxurious.

Again though, this is one of the creature comforts I need to provide so that the wife and 2 teen daughters will entertain going beyond plumbed campgrounds.

Thanks for the ideas, the dry one looks cool but I probably wont use it enough the justify the cost! I'll look more into the Dometic and the Thetford.

Planning on venturing to more places without facilities, and while I dont mind making catholes, my wife and kids will have none of it.
Not just this, but our National parks are getting so overcrowded that you're really supposed to take back whatever you took in including your own poop.

A great point. A dispersed camping area not too far away is riddled with crap and TP from holes too shallow, and while beautiful, is not on my list of places to go. I'm sure there are plenty of places like that, and certainly want to avoid.

Yep, same. I keep a compact folding camp shovel in my truck. Super handy. It was supposed to be for backpacking, but the little garden shovel/trowel make more sense.

Yeah, I gave up on that... The wife went with me a lot before we had kids. Than not at all. Kids never got into camping until they were older. Now the kids don't have time -- I have a junior in college and a HS senior...

WAG bags by clean waste are pretty good. My overland group used them for a long trip. We just leaned against a tree or sat back on a log, but they make a folding plastic toilet, or you can get a 5 gal bucket with seat topper.

The bags work great- heavy duty, have the gel powder in there so they don't smell or spill. The kits come with a second zip lock bag so it double bags it and you throw it into the trash. So much better than dumping a nasty porta-potty.

They're pretty tough. One morning the trash bag fell off the back of one of the jeeps on the highway. We went back and picked up all the scattered garbage on the side of the highway and none of the wags broke open.

For number 1's, Travel Johns are great. I use them for the middle of the night tent pee. Toss it out the door, it won't spill, and throw away in the morning.

Yes it fits easily… good unit for the money. You‘ll want to purchase some chemical to add to the holding tank.

Definitely going to need to pick one up to get my wife to go anywhere beyond an established campground. Her two stipulations were a toilet and a shower. Have the shower handled. I figure with one of these she can't possibly say no, right?? Had a Camco unit similar to the Dometic in my Amazon cart. They also have a "carry/storage bag" for it, which would probably also fit the Dometic.

Ah yes, the shower. Another thing that I could do without but might definitely heighten the wife's experience that may lead to wanting to do more trips... might i ask what you went with?

I picked up the Joolca unit: hot water shower kit with Two-Room Shower tent. The portable toilet can be used in the dry room of the tent for privacy. You can also pipe your diesel heater duct into the tent to take the edge of cold.

I have an OVS shower enclosure to mount on the roof racks, and am waiting on the Companion Aquaheat (and Aeroheat tent heater) from Australia. They don't have the Aeroheat in stock, so it is just a refundable deposit. If the Aeroheat takes too long (I really doubt my wife is going to want to camp when it will be needed anyway), I may switch to one of the Joolca units (or make a setup from the similar, but cheaper Camplux), or a Hike Crew. I really would love to not have to take propane, but at this time, it is a much better option for cooking and heating water.
