Just ordered a Model Y Long Range for my wife. We had our eyes open out there, but at this price point, it's too good to pass up. Feb-Mar delivery for 7 seater.

This will hit Rivian one way or the other, regardless if potential buyers cross shop or not. They're not out of the woods. If the "buy an EV at any price" era is coming to an end that's going to put pressure on all EV margins.

If the "Buy an EV at any price" era is about over, thank goodness, I was getting sick of it.
Yup. With the recession in 2023 coming, and it's coming no matter what the nay-sayers say, the pool of people willing to pay $100K for EV's is going to dry up real quick.

IMO when you can get a Model Y long range for half the price of a new post-price increase Rivian, this is accelerating Rivians demise.

Isn't this a little like saying if you can get a Toyota Venza for half the price of a Land Rover, this is accelerating Land Rover's demise? They're completely different vehicles for size, style, and capability. Rivian's demise or lack thereof will be be determined by the R2 line.

You don't think the model Y ground clearance of 6.6" is going to be a deal breaker for a lot of Rivian R1S buyers?

This thread has 6k views in less than 24 hours on a Thursday into Friday. I think there’s more cross-shopping than folks think but linking this one action to the impending death of Rivian is premature.

There are many features that truly distinguish one vehicle from another, but the Model Y is probably similar enough to the Rivian offerings for many people to shift the landscape at Rivian over the next several months at least. Some of these features are solutions without a compelling problem (integrated flashlight, camp speaker) while other features may be solutions to true problems for which the customer has no alternative (ie want a great EV but not from Elon, constellation of range/off road capability/interior capacity).

Well, no one with 2 or fewer kids &/or teens. If you have 3 or more children in your family, not to mention some dogs as well, a full sized SUV is almost the only option, assuming you don't want a mini-van. Even mini-vans aren't all that roomy often, after all they are usually built on a full sized sedan chassis.
I have 3 kids, 2 dogs, and a model S. It is WAY too tight now that 2 of them are tall-ish teens, to use for a family trip longer than about 1 or 2 hours (which is quite often, 3-4x per month). It has the 3rd row jump seats too, which were great when the kids were small enough to fit there, which lasted about 2 years after they could be out of child seats and before they were too tall for it.
Our other car is a 2007 Sequoia with 3 rows. It's great, but old and a gas guzzler. And despite its size we pack it full on a regular basis. Plus we really prefer to drive electric. So, hoping for an R1S someday/maybe. The more I see them on the road though, the more I think it may be too small still for us.
4 kids, 1 wife and 1 small dog here(really should have gone 4 wives 1 kid) and while I plan to make it work, my son just brought it up as his concern, as we packed up the suburban for the ski house. I am thinking I will be needing an xl roof box and possibly hitch mount the skis. I am fully expecting some trade offs and some tight packing jobs for road trips.

They might sell you one... but you won't be allowed to drive it without the VinFast Security Guard accompanying you, keeping a sharp on every move you make

I feel they are in for a very rude awakening once non-sponsored/non-censored reviewers get their hands on the vehicles.
YMMV.. While not a reviewer I have spent a bit of time in the VF8 and theres pros and cons to it. The seats are comfy and interior design is not bad, controls are meh, its not as punchy as the base model Tesla in it’s current form. At CES I was shuttled around a bit in them from location to location and it fit 4 execs and a driver well. I was also fortunate enough to drive the VF8 in Long Beach on an auto cross inspired course. I got 2 laps of open throttle, skid pad, slalom tight turns. It surprised me at how well it did really. After that a professional driver got in and took me around the course pushing the boundary much more than I would have… again, surprised!

Overall I think Kyle got a really crappy track to try it on and its easy to pan them coming on the scene, but I do think the VF6 (which looks really good in person) will find success as it will play in the sub compact space Tesla has yet to cover.

This now qualifies the MY for the federal credit until at least March.

Model 3 RWD: $43,990 (from $46,990, a 6.4% drop) • Model 3 P: $53,990 ($62,990, 14.2% drop) • Model Y Long Range: $52,990 (from $65,990, a 20% drop) • Model Y P: $56,990 (from $69,990, a 19% drop)

The new pricing better aligms with the quality of the product produced; especially the S/X line…

People cross shop vehicles all the time. Especially EV's, and the R1S isn't even that much larger than the Y inside. 99% of R1S buyers aren't going to use more than 6.6" of ground clearance. It'll be In the mall parking lot.

Cost is the #1 factor in a vehicle purchase unless you're wealthy. Especially so heading into a recession.

By 2024, Rivian will be losing a $Billion per month.

I don't think it matters for a lot of those people if they will or won't actually use the ground clearance. It's about appearance for them. There's probably a lot of cross shopping because they both seat 7 and it's an absolute requirement. But odds are those people were looking at the Y before anyway since it was still cheaper.

I'm tempted by the RWD 3 now. After taxes + tax credit it would be like 41k. I really want to get rid of my other gas car and my daughter is turning 16 in 6 months. A nice safe ev would give me peace of mind (my previous Tesla M3 was totaled but wife was unharmed).
