I'm confused why the group is protesting something involving sex offenders, but refuses to discuss or disclose the specific reason.

What is the point of a protest if you won't talk about your cause? Unless your cause is simply to disrupt without any specific complaint you want to address? A successful/valid protest should involve:
  1. We believe "ABC" is wrong...
  2. We want "XYZ" to occur to fix it.
It's hard for me to take their protest seriously as anything more than attention seeking, until they are willing to discuss those details.

If so, I respect the protestors even less.
I work in Irvine. A couple of years ago, they camped out daily for the better part of a year on Jamboree by the Google building with a big sign saying unfair labor practices. We asked them a couple of times what the specific grievances were. No one on the line could articulate any specifics. They were in between jobs and the union was paying them a daily rate to show up and spend the day there. Never did find out what the specific issues were, not sure how effective that really was for them.

So happy that I live in a right-to-work state, it makes unions powerless. I remember during my college days having summer jobs were I was forced to join a union, just to pay them dues and to get nothing in return.

Although there are bad unions — and it sounds like this Irvine situation involves one — “right to work” is a misleading label, and laws that prohibit organization of labor and collective bargaining are absolutely against the interests of the ”people”.

FIFY
The only benefits I get from my Union membership are better wages, health insurance for my whole family, and a great retirement package.

If non-union shops can produce the same or better work quality for lower cost, they should be freely able to. If their work quality is less, then the market will take care of itself.

Of course union workers are pro-union, but it's no secret that unions are less cost competitive.

That's not why unions exist. But if providing a reasonable standard for compensation and working conditions for everyone engaged in the labor market isn't a priority to you, hey that's cool too.

I would argue that the non union shops have a reasonable standard for compensation & working conditions.

I've seen way more bad than good with unions, but I completely understand that not everyone sees things that way.

What did you do in college, and what do you do now?

There are definitely plenty of terrible unions out there, just like there are tons of awesome companies with non-union employees that do a fantastic job taking care of them while still providing quality goods and services.

On the whole, however, unions are pretty critical in maintaining a fair(ish) balance of power between employers and employees.

Unions are a hot topic that can be debated for days. Personally, I have never been a fan of people getting priority for seniority and tenure over work-effort and ability which you see frequently in union contracts. I think there was a time when unions were absolutely necessary, it’s just with all of the labor law implementations between 1940 and 1970, that the benefits they provided are no longer as relevant as in the early days.
