Keeping crossbars on or off -- opinion?

I just received and installed my set over the bed, and I notice that the instructions say to remove them when not in use. Why do they adjust for length, storage?

I did a few biceps curls with one prior to installing them. I guess I could have a mobile gym and workout at the beach.

The length when on bed vs the top are quite different. By being adjustable, the bars work on either location.

They are so quick to put on/take off, so although I usually have them on, if I do any long drives, I take them off. Takes 2 min.

We keep ours on the bed full time.

Just completed a 400mi road trip at 80mph where our efficiency was almost exactly what all the YouTube 21" wheel range testers have seen, so we're dubious that the range hit is noticeable.

(Keeping them on the roof all the time would probably be noticeable!)

I've put 500 miles on my truck with the bars on the roof in varying driving conditions and not noticed a bit of range drop. I don't watch it super carefully, but if it makes a difference, it's not drastic.
Why the roof? I love the look of it vs the bed.... but when loading my bike, def move them to the bed.

Mine are on over the roof almost all the time and I commute >300mi round trip twice a week. Not a big deal. Mine are over the roof for surfboards but will eventually get a second set if I ever pickup a RTT for over the bed.

I leave them on the bed. When putting them on the glass roof by myself, I'm paranoid I'll crack the glass.

They can also collapse enough to be stored in the frunk.

I keep mine off until I need them, that is the benefit of their design . They interfere with most things I need to load into the bed. On the roof, they lead to some wind noise beginning at about 40-50mph.

if I didn’t use my bed so much, I would keep them over the bed- they do look cool there.

I actually tested the efficiency hit on a recent trip to Utah. Between Wendover and SLC there is a very flat very straight section of I-70. I did 15 mines with the bars on over the bed (with MaxTrax) and another 15 miles with them off. No measurable difference at all. Maybe there would be with a longer test? I doubt it but if so it would be small.

It's noisy as h*ll on the roof, inconvenient and in the way when you need to use the bed, and look real ugly on the truck. The only way I would have them on is if I need them. You really don't want to break the clean elegant line of the R1T, there's really nothing that can compare with it.

Over at the Porsche forums, lots of similar debate over roof rails on the Macans and Cayenne whether they look good or not. It's a toss-up! General opinions don't matter, you do what you like!

My cross bars stay on over the bed full-time. I use them and frankly I think it looks better with them on..........

They interfere with normal bed usage, so I keep them off when not in use. Look silly and are a range hit on the cab
