It’s been covered ad-nauseam in other threads. It provides access to apps and services which are already installed, signed in, and synchronized on your phone within your infotainment. Way more functional than Rivian’s current offering. Rivian will never compete with the breadth of app and service offerings CarPlay offers. It’s a “one-and-done” solution. The convenience of having everything powered from the phone also means you don’t have to setup different vehicles with your accounts and preferences. Your phone, which is already with you, powers it all.
Be careful what you wish for. My wife's Volvo XC40 just got the CarPlay update. She's been waiting for a long time for it and it was a big let-down for her. She's not going to use it. One of the trade-offs is that since Android Automotive powers both the main display as well as the instrument cluster, when in CarPlay mode there is no longer a map or extra information on the instrument cluster. CarPlay just cannot drive both displays. So, in CarPlay mode she _only_ gets speedometer on the instrument cluster. So, she would still have to look away from the road a lot more than she wants.

First, that's an implementation problem, not a CarPlay problem. Sounds like Volvo pushed out a barebones implementation. CarPlay absolutely can drive instrument clusters and heads-up displays as it does so in my BMW.

Second, I would still use it over the native system. I don't care about maps in my instrument cluster if they aren't the maps I want to use.

The point is give us the choice, even if it's not a fully-integrated implementation.

With some of the replies, especially the one linking to the Android Automotive wikipedia page, it's obvious I have some more research to do. Do we have it confirmed from those OEMs that they are using it, or is it just that wikipedia page as the source of the information?
I can confirm with 100% certainty that GM and Volvo have production products in the hand of customers with AAOS.

Looks like BMW was the only vendor that Apple partnered with to do dual screen support. Wide support apparently isn’t available until iOS16 and only in select cars - https://fordauthority.com/2022/06/future-ford-models-to-feature-apple-carplay-on-instrument-cluster/

My brother's new Silverado has AAOS (the full shebang with Play Store and Google Assistant). I asked him how he liked it and he said "eh I dunno I just use CarPlay" ?

1) Somebody needs to find the Ethernet connection(s) to the equipment that runs the displays & attempt to sniff them.
- I'm personally willing to bet that all Ethernet comms between components are encrypted.
2) Best potential vector is to physically access one of the HW components on the Ethernet network if it has alternative connection methods & see if access can be gained to the component/OS itself.

Not a quick or easy process, but my bet is that you won't find anything useful on the vehicle LAN or over the WAN.
