Hi All!

I wanted to ask fellow R1T owners that have hit 5kmi on their truck if your steering wheel shakes when you hit speeds of 65mph or above, if you have, have you taken it for alignment at any tire shop that does alignment and balancing, or have you taken it to a service center?

Cheers,
Rodrigo

Sounds more like balance issue to me. Have you been off-roading or hit any big bumps? That can sometimes cause wheel weights to come off. Regardless, you’re probably about due for a rotation and balance anyhow.

More than likely this is a tire/wheel out-of-balance issue which any tire shop should be able to handle. If it's not that, the next most likely option is a worn/defective suspension component that will need to be replaced by Rivian.

Do you have any signs of unusual tire wear (cupping, chunking, etc)? Anything stuck in the tread? Any signs of losing one or more of the weights used to balance the wheel?

Also something you can quickly check yourself. If you recently did any off-roading, if mud gets stuck to the inner wheel barrels, it can be quite shaky as your speeds increase due to the balance of the wheel being significantly off.

Hopefully it is something easy like that and you can blast it away with a hose and some towels.

I did drive on a dirt trail and did some donuts but nothing that would cover it fully in mud, I washed the truck right away, the entire underbody and around the wheels. I agree it's probably about time for a rotation and balance. Thanks!

Which wheel option? 20s?

Just got the truck a few days ago. When I hit 80mph and above, it shakes/vibrates. I've submitted a service ticket for balancing, and alignment (it steers slightly to the right).
Same problem as my R1T. Must have been built on the same day. Service ticket opened. No response yet.

Anyone willing to share a video of what it looks like?

I also have the 22’s and have noticed some irregular shaking above 45 mph but wasn’t sure if it was just caused by the road surface. It’s not that noticeable to my hands but if I briefly let go of the wheel, I can see it oscillating. I have done zero off-roading or mud clodding so don’t think anything has clung to the wheel.

I just got my truck back from the Houston service center because I had blue fluid (hydraulic dampener) leaking from my front passenger shock and was told they performed an alignment after replacing the defective parts. I would hope they would have checked out that everything was balanced but maybe that’s not standard of care.

Take it back and make them drive it with you on highway speeds. After they "fixed" it, the same issue came back and I haven't been driving the truck on long distances. It now also pulls to the right if I just let the wheel go.

I have noticed that Rivian service is very bad with quality control, I've had many issues in which they don't confirm that the problem has been fixed. They do the "fix" and call you to pick it up, any vehicle repair shop or dealership will test the vehicle first and confirm that the problem is gone.

My R1T (VIN 8,8xx) is currently "repaired " and waiting for me to pick it up at the San Diego service center tomorrow. The service manager confessed that they are aware of the shaking steering wheel issue and engineers in Normal are working on it. Needless to say I am not pleased. I'll see how bad it is tomorrow and report back.

EDIT: I have the 22 Sport Brites

When I did a 5 tire rotation at 6500 miles I started getting some shimmy >65mph. Turns out my spare wasn't properly balanced so easy fix.

Did you do this at any tire shop or at a Rivian service center?

Random tire shop. The balancing part any should be able to do but they may not know the specifics to lift the vehicle to remove the tire but it's all in the manual.
