So essentially, some folks will be invited to visit the on-line dealership and buy one off the lot.

This sounds bad for the R1S for sure. I think the key will be if they try to get the R1S LEs out this year. If I recall correctly, the original windows had LEs done in Q3 2021. Do they still plan to finish that out? I fear no or they could have said so in this communication.

I wonder if they tell you the R1 in the shop is one that was rejected with multiple Drive-train replacement or just an extra off the line.

Looks like 23 guys like me are still in the insignificant club. Have to wait for the rest of the yer to get the bird in the email.

Granted I know almost zero about automotive manufacturing, but it baffles me how they've made essentially no additional, production ready R1S vehicles since December. Was that production line just not finished until after the R1T started production? Is there some big R1S specific manufacturing problem? Just weird.

I am sure they know more of their competitive edge is gone with every delay. We all knew the ride would be bumpy when we got on. This is just another bump. It looks like, I am looking at two years wait now. I wonder what else would be out there in two years.

The problem right now is the value prop. If you're locked in to Pre-March pricing on either your T or S, you're not going to find anything else out there even remotely competitive at that price point. So while waiting sucks, as people have been saying, it'll be worth it.

Introducing the R1 Shop

This month, we’ll introduce the R1 Shop, an online experience that gives invited preorder holders the opportunity to swap their current R1 configuration* for a new configuration with expected delivery in the next 6-8 weeks or sooner.
Tony Caravano
Head of Rivian Customer Engagement

*Adventure Gear included in your existing configuration will transfer to R1 shop configurations except for the Camp Kitchen, Three-Person Tent and Gear Tunnel Shuttle.
I'm not sure if people are missing this, but for me at least this could be somewhat good news. Acknowledging what many of us already know regarding delays in the Camp Kitchen, Yakima Tent, and Gear Shuttle could translate to earlier deliveries for some. I for one am more than willing to forego those items for now if it means an earlier delivery of my R1T. YMMV

Value proposition is great now but hard to tell if that will be the case in two years. some of R1 features and capabilities are already behind competition.

Edit: Because of that, the shop they announced may end up being quite popular.

It is feeling like they are just throwing ideas against the wall to see if anything sticks.

I have a suspicion this will not make the complainers any happier. Especially with the 1-week window to access, people are going to continue to complain about others with more recent orders getting their vehicles first.

Perhaps an early reservation holder has white configured but was willing to switch to silver. But when they get their invite to swap configs, all Rivian was making that week was blue, green and yellow so they leave their config as is. Then the next week, after their opportunity to swap configs has timed out, Rivian starts making silver. People who ordered last week get their trucks and that guy who was fine with white or silver is still waiting.
It is an imperfect world, my friend. Perhaps more so in Normal than normal.

Accessory availability has not been slowing down deliveries. They are simply delivering without them and shipping the accessories later. My charger arrived UPS the same day as my truck. My crossbars arrived about a week later. Still waiting on all weather floor mats (as well as wristband key).

This seems like a fairly likely scenario. I have LA Silver configured but would take Glacier White as a strong second choice. I would be frustrated if during “my” week the color options are limited to black and Limestone, causing me to wait, only to have LA Silver and Glacier White models available the next week, when my window has passed.

I also wonder whether the models available will be dynamic throughout the week. If nothing I want is there on Monday, does that mean I may have other options on Wednesday? Do I risk missing out if I pass up something on Monday only to have even fewer options on Friday? I’m looking forward to getting a better idea of how this will work.

From what I've noticed, most of the batching is done based on interior color, wheel, and underbody reinforcement, and not as much by exterior colors. So it may be a moot point. We won't know until the time comes for this thing to open up.
