We got out of our Tesla and jumped into a Rivian.

Rivian is very vey nice, we drove a Porsche Taycan, Hyundia 6, Mach E but nothing was like the Tesla/Rivian tech they were like "normal" cars.

After we got home we were like, there must be some way to get text messages and after searching we were like really??? Nothing???? That may have been a deal breaker if we had known that, the Tesla does it so well!

The next one is, opening the charging door, the Tesla you click on the charger and it just opens.....maybe the Rivian will too but haven't dug into that just yet.

Funny though, we went to dinner and could see it parked, and people just flocked to it! It was funny to watch.

We haven't had much time to dig into the truck yet, but so far we are impressed.

Tesla was a great car, but man they are everywhere you look now!

Anyways, looking forward to spending time in here learning about the truck.

Yeah figured that out, how can they not? Kinda crazy
Personally I don't see the need to text while driving. It can wait until I get to where I'm going or if it can't they can call me. Texting is for messages that do not require immediate urgency.

The wife has an hour commute and she has a job where she gets lots of texts and they require quick decisions to be made, in the Tesla it was very easy and worked about 99 percent of the time.
She will just have to deal with it haha

Sounds like her job can call her or let her concentrate on her drive so she makes it into work safely for that hour commute. If she's important enough that they need to get a hold of her I'm sure they don't want her getting into an accident because of a text message.

We also have a Tesla, and you can really see Tesla's multi-year lead in software development. Some of it is features, some is UI, and some of it is things that should just be fixed (albeit not too many of these). Different things get different people. It's texting for some people, audio quality for others, navigation for some, and HVAC for different groups. Which I'm sure will lead to plenty of complaints when one individuals priority isn't Rivian's priority.

But none of these "Tesla has this feature" things take away from how amazing and useful the truck is. About the only time I'd take the Tesla out over the Rivian is if I'm going someplace downtown with tiny parking spots.

This software gap will also close over time. Not as fast as we'd like, but it will narrow a bit with each update.

We are looking forward to that.
We are trying to clear our heads of the Tesla UI, everything seems great it just left us scratching our heads... Texting seems so obvious in this day and age. We are not crying about it, just surprised.

I am not a former Tesla owner, but compared to the other cars I’ve driven, Rivian has been exceptional with adding useful software features on a regular basis. It felt like we were getting about 1 big update every 30-45 days through the first half of this year.

You can touch the 3 lines icon on the charging port door and it’ll open. The button on the Tesla charger works about 40% of the time with our Model 3.

PaaK is a lot more reliable with my R1S than the M3 also. With the Tesla, 50% of the time, I have to get the phone out of my pocket and wave it around or open the Tesla app for the car to unlock. Auto-Wipers behave differently according to what update was installed in the Tesla, but mostly they don’t work “automatically“.

The software in my R1S today is a lot more stable than what was in the M3 in 2018, a year in that model’s production. Tesla has definitely improved and polished things but it took a long time.

I also sold my Model 3 after taking delivery of my R1T over a year ago. The Model 3 was the best car I had ever owned, but I really love my Rivian. I miss some of the UI from Tesla as well, but wouldn't trade my R1T for anything.

For me the two things I really miss are auto pilot (being able to use it on any road and the fact that it wouldn't cut out at random times on interstates, like Rivian's version does). I also miss having native YouTube and Netflix on the vehicle's screen, but supposedly that's coming to Rivian as well.

For some reason, the text messaging software in our Teslas always glitched and froze where it would stop working after a bit and then restart some random time later. That was pretty common for most features to be honest.

I hope Rivian's solution is a bit more stable.

Now you can hunt for your next discovery. Car wash mode to prevent it from doing that, lol.

Congrats on your beautiful R1T. May I say, you have excellent taste in colors.

Unfortunately, the only thing people around here care about are the following:

1. How are you panel gaps?
2. One magnet or two?
3. Wood or plastic trim behind the headrests?

Personally, I think it's childish and I would have thought after getting into the 10's of thousands of production units we would have moved on from that.

Do hurry up and answer though. Asking for a friend...
