My R1S has had a rattle since delivery, but it has been intermittent so I hadn't taken it to a service center for a look. At first I suspected the speaker cover since that's where many people seem to get a rattle, but I was never able to pinpoint it until the other day. It was clearly coming from the drivers side so I started moving my foot around in the foot well and immediately found the problem. There is a small plastic kick panel directly above the dead pedal that houses the OBDII port and an LED light. That panel was the culprit. As soon as I touched it with my foot my rattle was gone. I removed the panel when I got home and found two large locating pins at the firewall end of the panel. Those pins have a very loose fit with the mating part and this was creating my rattle. I simply wrapped some thin adhesive-backed foam tape around the pins and my vehicle is now silent. Just thought I'd share in case anyone else is having similar trouble.

Thanks for sharing...I've had one to the left of the steering wheel that's materialized lately....I'll have to look here.

I had a mystery intermittent rattle coming from my front passenger seat. First I thought it was the seat belt getting caught tapping between the side of the seat and the B pillar. After a few months, I randomly stuck my finger between the headrest cushion and found a random “nut” sandwiched there. After removing it, the rattle was gone. As near as I can tell, there is no need for a nut to secure anything there… probably was left there by random chance or dropped in during assembly.

Thanks for sharing. I have a rattle in that same area and thought it was the front of the door panel. SC took it apart and put some foam or something in there and it didnt fix it. I will try this to see if it solves my issue.

Thanks for the detailed work. I also have a rattle but I’m pretty sure mine is coming from the metal center speaker grill because pressing down on it seems to eliminate the rattle for a while.

I was driving last week and felt a screw fall and hit my foot. It looked like an important screw so I saved it then later that day that same plastic piece you're talking about fell out completely. I was able to re-insert it and screw it back in tightly. I think that helped some of my rattling but there is still some present. Hopefully there aren't any more important loose screws just waiting to be discovered;)

My dash rattle seemed to be coming from just left of the steering wheel, but this was the culprit. You've restored my sanity, such as it was. Thanks so much for posting!

I recently had a service appointment for this and they fixed with felt tape. Rattle is totally gone.

Haha, I was going insane for a while and found out about this rattle too! The solution I did was fairly similar. But using the standard fabric tape that bmw uses for their panels to fit snug and rattle free. Just wrapping the edges and pins with this tape fixed it for me. It is suprising how sloppy it fits. It had rattled from new, and even worse since I had Rivian check a wire harness issue that causes all my warning lights to randomly flash on the screen and off again. It would do this for a month or so about .2-3times a week… they checked every plug and pulled apart the dash, however when putting it back together the truck has never been the same. Lots of new noises :( I am taking it back to SC again to hope they can fix these new issues. However this one rattle was the worst and it’s the same one you are reporting. Rivian could make a fix my having rubber sleeves for these pins or something like that.

thanks OP! I had a rattle in the same spot on my Gen 1 and Gen 2 (sounded like A pillar or speaker on dash) but this one worked!

Only difference is on mine, it has 1 pin vs 2. I wrapped it with felt tape as well as applied a strip along the entire flat surface that is exposed above this pane ("mating part" in your photo)l. Rattle is gone.

Oh my gosh thank you!!! I had the service center do my dash and speaker (which I had to pay for...) but could not figure out later I still had a rattle to the left of the center dash near my steering wheel. I just completed this on lunch in the driveway and could tap that plastic piece and knew what it was. Took it apart, put some felt on the pins, I had to additionally put some felt tape on the body clip near the LED as this also rattle after I attached the screw and piece together. But after that I could tap it and did not hear that plastic on plastic rattle.

Thank you very much for posting!
