New (to me) information on Reddit about 3 Rivians spotted in NZ. The thinking is they are headed to the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds for more winter testing.

From what I Gather here are the testing criteria so definitely something up with EPA it seems to warrant a trip to NZ which is pretty crazy in terms of logistics. Had to be something pretty big id imagine.
It's really not worth speculating here. This is normal and does not in any way suggest that there was a problem with anything. Many, many cars are sent there, including the Tesla Model 3.

For full comparison: That Model 3 was seen in Auckland at the end of June 2017. Production Model 3s started rolling off of the assembly line on July 7, 2017, and the official launch event and first delivery (30 cars) was July 28.

I‘m coffee-deficient at the moment so I’m not following the link between EPA testing and taking Rivian consumer and commercial vehicles to New Zealand.

I could see them going to NZ to support their national push for adoption of EVs (political / PR), to get some footage / pictures of Rivians in the NZ landscape, or both. I guess we’ll find out soon.

Good comparison. We love our speculation around here mainly because there is nothing else to go by :p

The article mentions epa testing being done in a lab on a dynamometer.
I am not convinced R1's vacationing in NZ is relevant to EPA testing, it's a possible maybe.

The EPA tests are supposed to be done at warm and cold temperatures. It's winter in the Southern Hemisphere, so cold weather testing is more practical in NZ (especially in the mountains) than it is in the US right now.

So it's official then R1's will officially begin rolling off the assembly line on exactly July 7, 2021.
Good to know, I'm sure insideev's can run with this.

The actual EPA tests are done in a lab at., I am sure, a specified temperature.

The three coefficients necessary to specify the drag curve are obtained from rolling tests. I am sure SAE specifies some range of temperature and humidity for these tests

I assumed it would be less expensive and lower profile to do this testing in a climate controlled dynamometer facility here in the US.

There are probably other tests they want to run in winter conditions anyway.

That is true, does not help that people tend to go completely negative with all of their speculation.

For instance people immediately went to the extreme when they made the off road package optional. Instead of thinking for many people it may save 2K if they do not need/want it. They went to it was a huge drain on range and was dropped to meet the goal.

Curious how much everyone thinks this off road package could possibly weigh? My best guess maybe 25% of what the additional 45 kw for the max pack but I have not seen anyone significantly change the watts per mile estimate when comparing the max pack and the large pack.
