It's part of the system for driver entry. I have mine slightly relocated (and pointing up instead of out) and don't think it's negatively affected my access (but hard to know some times).

I just want to rivet a passenger side grab handle... but pages 51 and 53 say in a fancy way that the car will break apart if I do that.... wonderful.

Roger that. I really miss a-pillar oh-s$it handles. I really wish Rivian offered them, or at least provisioned for them as an aftermarket add-on.

It's not going to break apart, they're just warning you not to drill into an explosive airbag inflator or install anything that will prevent the side curtain airbag from inflating.

I was hit in a severe side impact and the curtain airbag saved me from at least a concussion, potentially a TBI. Not sure how manufacturers who do install grab handles here route their airbags.
