yes I thought I was lucky but that didn't last long......my windshield cracked today :crying::crying:

I am trying to get recommendations on replacement.

I know Safelite does Rivian windshield replacement but, I wonder if they use genuine OEM.

Apparently Safelite is hit and miss on being able to do the recalibration. I am going through the process now and ended up opting to drive 3 hours to the closest SC.

In the past when Safelite couldn’t calibrate a Tesla windshield and required a Tesla Service Center visit afterwards, I instead got a new windshield installed by a Tesla certified body shop that could do both.

Last summer when my chipped R1S windshield turned into a crack overnight, Safelite told me they couldn’t calibrate Rivians so I took it to the same body shop which is also Rivian certified. Might be worth looking into in your area - probably faster than getting a Rivian Service Center appointment.

Safelite said they were going to order OEM glass, which is what the body shop did.

My nearest Safelite couldn't do the recalibration so I went to a Rivian Certified body shop and had them do it all. For comparison, my cost was $2100 and change covered by insurance.

Rivian mobile service can do the calibration.
Unless there is an issue recalibrating... then the finger pointing starts. I don't get why all Safelite shops don't recalibrate. You can either do the entire job or you can't. I now chuckle at their commercials where "They come to you." Sure, and then you have to go somewhere have someone finish the job!

want to provide an update ...a sad one :crying:

I called Rivian customer Support - who said they can replace the windshield but takes time with service center scheduling and moist importantly they don't bill insurance, I have to submit the paper work manually. instead they recommended I go to one of the partner body shops in Chicago area.

So I scheduled the replacement, dropped the car etc., the Body shop did a good work but they charged $3659
that seemed a lot - Insurance covered most of it but that cost felt excessive.

After the deliver, within a week I have another windshield crack now.:mad:.....over the weekend I was driving on I-290 and a pebble hit the windshield right above driver side viewing area.

I guess the saying that Chicago having only 2 seasons - Winter and construction is true.
All the highways/side roads are all under construction and too much debris. I am just pissed and sad at this point.

Don't know if I want to go back to the same body shop - any suggestions/comments?

If I had to go through the windshield replacement process again... I would do this:
1) Schedule a mobile service appointment to calibrate the windshield ADAS sensor. Expect it to be a few weeks out minimum.
2) With the Rivian mobile service date, call Safelite and schedule them to come out the day before to replace the windshield.

It would be quicker, cheaper, less hassle and no service center visit.

If it hasn't spread too far yet just get it patched. I finally got one and just paid someone to patch it (although you can get kits yourself.) Much cheaper than doing whole new glass.

General tip: Make use of forum search, or you’re skipping out on useful info. There are multiple threads on this topic. Over 3k is far too much for windshield replacement. That equates to what an auto glass specialist charges plus pure middleman profit for the collision shop. From other threads: It should be around 1800 at Rivian SC and around 800 at Safelite (OEE glass by Fuyao) with around 80 for calibration by Rivian SC (separate appointment). OEM glass is also made by Fuyao. The visible difference is the latter has both Rivian and Fuyao logos.

Find and call around to local glass dealers, such as PPG or Pilkington. If the glass is replaced correctly, camera calibration is rarely required. The vehicle will tell you if it needs it.

Those two make glass for R1? I don’t think they do.

FYI I had mobile windshield guy come and fix 2 small cracks for $75. One was starting to spider and about 3” wide. So far so good.
safelight charged me $200 for the same thing a year ago. Total rip off. I don’t think they did anything different than what the $75 guy did. Although the Safelite repair has lasted a year now.

I absolutely do not recommend Safelite. Their Fuyao glass itself is not identical; it's slightly less wide so it's harder to align the gaskets on the edges evenly. Rivian Fuyao is wider and the gaskets align, meaning no/less buffering noise.

I had a terrible Safelite experience, separate thread discussing it, and will not use them again. USAA insurance made the experience even worse, so bad I'm finally dumping them for all products.
