Hello Rivian Fam,
This will be kind of a long post, but wanted to share for those who can't wait for an R2 and want to consider something else (please avoid any crossover vs. SUV discussions here, this post ain't for you if you think the Model Y and R2 have nothing to do with each other).
So I originally wanted my wife to updated her Mach-E to an R2. We loved the Mach-E, but Ford has made it very clear that its electric ambitions are lukewarm (aka market dependent) at best so any hopes of a refresh or software updates to reinvigorated life into the car faded. Winter range and slow charging times also made us start looking at alternatives
When the new Model Y Performance was announced back in August, I actually found myself excited for a Tesla. The performance touches made it look more unique and special, and it looked fantastic in red. Loved the idea of it, but wasn't a car that made sense in our lineup. So recently, out of curiosity, I started looking at the Model Y more carefully and did a few demos. I enjoyed it but felt like something was missing. FSD was impressive, but the car was just fine.
My wife was in a good mood and she knows how much I love cars, so she agreed to give the Y a try and see how the FSD thing works. She really enjoyed it and we kind of pivoted into looking for a Model Y since R2 news were more like teases rather than anything we can really work with. So after debating for a while, she agreed to trade her Mach-E for a Model Y and I would pay the difference to upgrade to the performance.
After a few months and Tesla being slightly difficult to work with, we finally got delivery last week. Honeymoon phase aside, I can really say that the new Model Y Performance is really really good. Not like good for a Tesla, but good for any car, period, specially at its price point. Suspension is well tuned for sporty driving but not overly harsh, no rattles or squeaks and the cabin is dead silent, the seats are one of the most comfortable of any car I've been in and the tech is as responsive as we get state side. FSD is not perfect but it does a good enough job that I find myself using it for boring commute duty while enjoying the fantastic sound system in the car. They are some cons, like no 360 camera and lack of a physical gear shifter, but I'm really digging it.
As for the R2, I'm still considering one for myself to downsize the R1S. Any excitement we had has kind of lost sails with no real spec to work with, but I'm excited to see what Rivian can deliver on a smaller chassis with three motors. Really hoping they have figured out the sound system and suspension tuning for the R2, but until we can get our hands on and try out for certain, I'm really happy with the MYP. Competition in this space is getting really good (the iX3 and Volvo EX60 are also welcome competitors) so overall I'd say it's a good time to be in the market for this segment!
TLDR: The MYP is really freaking good and I hope the R2 Tri can deliver at a competitive price point.
