Yeah the 180 thing would justify the Rivian's being powered. That's a useful feature because now that they got rid of it loading the bed is a pain in the ass sometimes because the tailgate sticks so far out. It's hard to load it in instances where you don't need the extra bed length which for me is most of them.The powered tailgate was far more complex than just an open/close tailgate. Theirs had the ability to go from 0-90 degrees, to 180 degrees to better facilitate rear access.
The cables that hold a tailgate at 90 degrees, would also decouple, to allow it to swing the full 180. Watch the video below.
