I'm wondering how easy it will be to install a radar/laser detector in the Rivian. By the time I got my Tesla, local dealers had done a few installations on them and figured things out, and I was told Tesla was giving installers a lot of support with information and advice. I have a feeling I may be the first person in town to show up at the installer with a Rivian. I hope Rivian will be equally supportive.

I also run a radar detector on a regular basis. There should already be power at the rearview mirror, so hopefully there will be ignition-switched & easily accessible.

I've always done my own audio & accessory installs, and the Rivian panels etc should go together the same way that other vehicles do.

I use Escort Passports, which have sensors mounted on the front and rear bumpers, from which wiring must be run into the cabin. I'm wondering if the underbody sealing of the Rivian to enable things such a stream fording is going to make that dicier than in a conventional vehicle.

Ah, external sensors. That could definitely make things trickier, but there will be a way. I think I might forego external sensors, due to mounting alone (not to mention sensor wiring), and just go with a regular radar detector.

I have a 4 or 5 year old Passport 9500IX, and it's still awesome. RF has great sensitivity & range (no directionality though), and it's already too late if the laser ever goes off.

I may end up going with a dashboard-mounted detector if the wiring for external mounting is too involved. However, the lower-mounted external sensors have more range (although the lower mounting seems counterintuitive to me).

I have laser shifting incorporated in my two Passports. If you are hit with a laser beam, the return beam is scrambled until you hit a button on the control panel. This gives you a moment to slow down before the officer can shoot your car again and get a clean signal back. Since laser beams often do not return clean signals, officers frequently have to fire a second time, so it does not necessarily seem suspicious to them (unless maybe you jam on the brakes so fast that you nosedive).

Mine is mounted to/under my rearview & wired into power there as well. Super clean & has always worked great.

Laser shifters are illegal here, but the majority of radar is KA.

I'm also curious to see how the onboard lidar in upcoming vehicles, like our Rivians, will affect radar detectors & whether laser shifters could become a safety concern. Any idea?

Hmm. I hadn't thought about Lidar. Since the Passport only generates a scrambling beam when it's being hit by a laser (I think), I would assume there wouldn't be regular interference. But that's just an uninformed guess.

I was thinking a possibility of confusing an autonomous car & causing strange braking etc. because the car may "see" things inaccurately.

However, it looks like lidar on vehicles will make many detectors false positive, but the radar shifters have more advanced tech. Even though police lidar & vehicle lidar can use similar wavelengths, the PPS (pulse per second) rates can differentiate the two.

Thanks google.
