Just curious if anyone has heard anything about programming your own key cards. Now that it's possible for the key fobs, I'm hoping they allow the same for cards.

I'm having one my mine replaced this week, and it's going to be $30 for the card, and $40 for a mobile tech to come and program it for me.

The card uses a very standard Mifare DESFire EV3 4k chip. Unbranded cards with the same chip can be purchased on amazon for $3/each. But unfortunately in the world of NFC cards and dongles, 10x+ markups are EXTREMELY common, so I guess I'll give em a pass on that.

$40 for someone to drive to me seems fairly reasonable, actually. But it seems a lot less wasteful for everyone involved if I could just do it myself. On the bright side, when I lost my previous card, it was extremely easy to deactivate in the app

This is 100% something that has to be done by Rivian and the mobile techs even need to call it in to program a key.

Yeah, and let us program one card to two vehicles. Hate carrying around two cards for 'no reason' but R1T left me stranded once... Will never be without a card again!

Eesh. I hope this is something they change soon! Such a waste of time for the tech and money for the owner

I agree. Now that we can reset our own tire choices in the system, we should be able to provision key cards. Rivian could even lock it down to only allow cards THEY sell us based on number.

It already seems like Service Centers and Mobile techs are already overworked / understaffed in most markets. Take this off their plate so they can focus on more important service calls. The will impact customer satisfaction directly.

With that - I would like to see other options in the gear shop for keycards. Like bring back the wristband key card or do a simple coin size dongle that can go on a key ring. These are relatively cheap items they could resell at a premium... and most of us would probably buy them.

The NFC is probably locked or it has some special encryption that only Rivian can access. I use to play with NFC tags and even though I could read the data, I couldn't change it. Try scanning the back page of your passport....you will see the information, but you can't do anything with it.
