PPF - your cost and type ?

Cool. I get a sense that there's a bias towards people trying to find ways to justify not getting PPF, to not feel left out or that it's not needed. At the end of the day, I think it's really up to the owner to figure out if they care enough about little dings.

I'm the type to cringe when I hear bits hitting my car. Superficial damage on a black car? Maybe a little. But it's worth it to me to feel less stressed out about it. I do enough non-paved driving and live in an area with a f-ton of shit getting kicked up, that this gives me some peace when driving.

Anyway, I'm getting it. It's budgeted. I will feel better.

Absolutely agree 100%. You are so right about how to think about the PPF issue.

If you only did the front, it's roughly $2K */-, and is that worth avoiding little dings? If one does not care, then why do it. If one cringes every time hearing some little sound that hit the vehicle and avoiding little dings is important, then do it.

It is the peace of mind that PPF buys you, not just the vehicle protection. No have to worry about every little dings.

My truck is now covered (color change) so really, there's nothing in this for me, sharing decades of experience.

Unless R2 gets some kind of sparkly color that I just adore, I'll get the Refrig White. Don't care about retaining mint paint condition but will do some PPF on leading + horizontal surfaces to deal with road debris + overhead hazards. Figure full front for leading panels, mirrors & horizontal hood, and perhaps that new Global sunroof PPF for that horizontal surface. That's probably it.

I was pretty set on getting this, but now that I'm two weeks away from taking delivery, I'm waffling! I'm not going to do REAL off-roading, I bought the street tires, but we will go on camping trips a bunch, and there's always rocks flying up on these LA highways. I guess I'm also concerned about assholes sideswiping and nicking the car, which happened to my current vehicle. IDK. I gotta call some shops and see how long it'll take them to do it proper and the cost. LA prices are bound to be absurd though.

It will be absurd. As a black car owner with some undiagnosed and some diagnosed issues with seemingly trivial things like this, it isn't something I regretted on my past cars.

I think color choice might feed into decision making. I intentionally selected Glacial White because it tends to hide dirt and dings way better than dark colors and is easy to touch up and match if there is body damage. Those with dark colors would probably “see” more value from PPF, especially those with all black. Again…it’s simply a value decision.

Ceramic coating is another decision. I love the way ceramic coatings bead on a freshly washed car. That said, a ceramic coating requires ongoing maintenance plus it must be removed to polish out light scratches. Not sure how many are considering ceramic instead of PPF.

Something not mentioned is car washing methods. Those with PPF applications where the edges have not been rolled might want avoid car washes that are not touchless…ask me how I know.

I have a suggestion. Purchase the $129.00 DIY kit for the high wear areas, back bumper and door ledges. Start with the ledges before attempting the bumper. Watch a few You Tube videos and I suspect you’ll have some success. This is a low risk/cost experiment. If it works out for you, order the PPF for the front end. If not, find a professional.

No…removal typically does not damage factory paint though there are some removal techniques you’ll want to deploy (heat and alcohol)
