Finally got to put the Navigation system to the test today. Had 16 properties I had to visit back to back. All in tight canyon roads and out of cell range.
Having come from Tesla's after 8 years, in which they just added the ability to do way points just a few months ago, was a feature I truly appreciated.
Rivian doesn't have way points, so went back to my old way of doing things with the Tesla, knowing that I would be out of cell range. At least with the Tesla, I would enter all addresses in before I left so they were in my history. Then simply tap on each address as needed and it would navigate to each and didn't need cell service to do so. If I didn't add the addresses in beforehand, then it was a pain in the rear to search offline in the Tesla. Hoped the Rivian would at least be the same.
Unfortunately, despite the address already being there, it still searched for an online connection. A couple of times it put up a notice that I was offline and asked to confirm that I still wanted to navigate to the address. Problem was, over half the time, it desperately wanted that internet connection and sat there searching for several minutes. I was on very tight canyon roads with no clue where I was, so I really needed the navigation to find my way out of there. Had to cancel multiple times and research. One time, sat there for at least 10 minutes before I could get the address to come up. Not acceptable. Either add the option to search offline via GPS location or if there's no cell signal, then go to it automatically within a few seconds, not 10 minutes later. Very frustrating. Especially since the address was already in there. With the Tesla, the only difference was that you don't have traffic info. Didn't care about traffic info in this type of situation. Just needed to find the right road to get out of there. Despite already being pre-entered addresses, it still searched each and every time, delaying the results and directions on every single address. But about half of them were the ones that had very long delays. I finally gave up on one of them and was able to use google maps on my phone, despite no cell service. Took two seconds. I couldn't even enter my home address once I was at the last property. It wanted to find the internet first.
Internet should only be needed for live traffic. Otherwise, shouldn't be relied on so heavily just for directions. Most navigation systems are GPS based. The traffic info is a secondary benefit that is nice, but the Rivian appears to be making it a priority, unlike just about every other system.
Clearly just software and can be updated. Hoping they update it very soon. Hoping they'll add waypoints very soon as well. For anyone using their vehicle for more than just to and from work.
Also, possibly they can reduce the need for so many confirmations. With the Tesla, just enter the address and hit enter and you're done. With the Rivian, even with cell service, have to do the same, then confirm each time. Hitting enter after entering the address is confirmation enough. No need to add the second confirmation.
Thankfully, again, just software programming and can be fixed. Just hoping that it's sooner rather than later. Didn't buy a $90K+ truck to have to use my phone for Navigation!! LOL
