GM almost invested in Rivian, rather than Ford.

GM screwed the pooch and thought a good alternative would be Nikola Motors. Of course that blew up in their faces.

GM holds more H2 fuel cell patents than anyone else. Nikola was going to be fuel cell tech.

Interesting reading about all of this now. I remember following this story when it all happened and seeing all of the smoke around a deal with GM only to have that fall through and a deal with Ford became official literally the next day.

I always assumed that GM insisted on an exclusive relationship with Rivian and when Rivian refused they went to Ford. That still could have been why RJ was open to meeting with Ford on the eve of the agreement with GM though, among other things.

GM turning around and settling for Nikola just made it that much funnier.

Nikola wasn't going to be anything. They, and their founder, were just a bunch of scammers from the get go.
