OK, I'm down with the "Jeep wave" and the "motorcycle wave" but I've been getting an "EV wave", either that or I have early onset Alzheimer's and can no longer recognize people waving at me. R1's are a bit of a novelty in my area, and seem to be a bit of a curiosity, but not to the legion of Tesla drivers who seem to be a lot friendlier since I started driving the R1S, waving, catching me off guard, with me waving late!

Is this a thing?

I haven't noticed it in the Northwest, where EVs are about 20% of new vehicle registrations.

Interested in others' observations!

I could see that in areas where there isn’t a high EV market penetration but otherwise no.
I’m happy to report I regularly get a Rivian wave around Boulder. It’s almost as common as me getting a Jeep Wave.

So I stopped next to a guy with the exact same car as my Mach-E. Looked at him with a smile. Nothing. I mean dude, we went through a 1-yr wait and lots of things that make humans naturally bond. Nothing. I shrugged and moved on.

Long winded way of saying: no. Although I miss the corvette “v” sign in my youth.

I've not seen than in Denver, but it seems half the cars on the road here are EVs. Even the Rivian wave seems rare, which is a shame. There are 4 R1S owners in my small 102 house HOA, and countless more teslas.
