I'm just sick of THESE inaccurate statements. 3 months =/= 3 years and the orders under delivery were honored while newer orders were told to sign a waiver (while most still saw a discount as goodwill), and the rest to cancel. Tesla didn't after 3 to 4 years tell order holders that their $70k vehicle was now $90k.. on the contrary, after the 2020 model year phased out and to the point of the refresh there was also a Plaid+ amongst other trims condensed into 2 models. If you put $100 down in March and were told in JULY that there was a price increase based on a just released but previously unknown vehicle then BOO FREAKING HOO. For Rivian it's the goodwill of four damn years of lies.

So yes, tesla is immune and rivian will pay the piper.
Again - don't think they did this correctly (can't imagine they will net much from not honoring early orders tbh), They were already under priced and inflation definitely didn't help. If Tesla was ramping Model S or Model 3 during this market they likely would have failed. I've seen a few people in the car industry say some parts have jumped high as double currently. Again more of a price justification and not a justification of what they did to preorder buyers. I actually hated tesla for opposite things, they had prices high then randomly dropped like 10k so at the time my car was immediately worth 10k less.

I get cost of raw materials go up and there's inflation, so I expected the price to go up some and was ok with it. What I'm not ok with is that when all of us pre-ordered our R1S, quad motors and large battery pack were standard, no other choice. Now all of a sudden those are upgrades and we're expected to pay an extra $12k for it. That's not inflation, that's greed. I don't know what else increased on my build but it went from $83k to $102k.
Also, if we don't go with our original configuration and want to change the motor or battery our delivery date gets pushed back to 2024.
I'm upset but I'm keeping my deposit in place for now since mine won't be delivered until 2023 and in the meantime I'll start shopping around again. Maybe they'll change course on some of those changes, maybe not.

Indeed, it's rough too, I have an early model s long range preorder still at like 95k and It's hard to justify it vs the r1t on a vehicle front but obviously Tesla is more proven(though I do very much think they've done equally scummy things even if they haven't done this specific scummy thing).

But yeah it's hard to find something in this niche atm and some of them like Defender are under heavy markups and 2 years out at some dealers i've called.

Nobody had any idea on a price range until the online configuration page was launched. Nov 2020.
