Hi all,

This morning, I tried charging R1S on a Tesla L2 charger using GearIT 1772 adapter.

Unfortunately, I kept getting 'unplug and try again' about five times. And once I got that and 'charger incompatible' message on the screen. Needless to say, the vehicle did not charge.

I set the charging amps to 32A since GearIT adapter clearly says they recommend max 40A for continuous usage.

Only one Tesla charger was free in this garage, so I couldn't test anywhere else.

Any thoughts on what else I could check?

Thanks everyone

Searching the internet for "Tesla Tap not working" since it is a more popular adapter it seems the major causes of adapters not working are:

  1. The adapter isn't seated correctly. Some of the adapters have such tight tolerances people report REALLY having to jam the adapter onto the wand and there should be no gap at all between the adapter and the wand. Some report putting a little bit of lubricant on the outside of the plastic on the adapter to make it easier (but avoid getting any on the pins).
  2. The adapter should be connected to the tesla charger first and sometimes up to a minute before plugging the charger into the vehicle. I guess the tesla charger needs to make it's connection with the adapter and if you do it too quickly the car might time out on the charge initiating before the charger is ready.
  3. The tesla level 2 chargers can be set to charge only Teslas. There is a switch in the chargers that allow them to only charge Teslas, there isn't a way to know if an adapter is setup this way (maybe on a plug share review?)

I think the issue is most likely 1 or 2

Thanks.

#2 definitely is not the issue as that was how I tried.

#1 not sure since it definitely locked from what I could see. I could not remove anything once locked.

#3 weird. Not sure Abt it.

I'll try again in a few hours.

It is theoretically possible the L2 charger is 277 volt. If that is the case, the Rivian cannot charge from that (Teslas can).

Ah! Interesting. I'll check it in an hour or so. Thank you.

Can I piggyback with more questions about destination chargers...

I see them listed at 6 to 17 kW on the Tesla site. Will the R1 be limited to pulling ~11.5 if the car is set to 48A and using a 48A adapter?

Yes, the Rivian will not take more than 48A (11.5kW) regardless of what the L2 chargers is rated. No problem plugging into an 80A charger, but the Rivian will only use 48A. And no problem plugging the Rivian into a 40A charger, the Rivian will not use more than the charger can provide.

You don't have to and don't need to set anything in the car. The car communicates with the charger and between them they agree on how much power is delivered. If the charger can only provide 32A, then it will communicate that to the car and the car will not try to use more than 32A.

Just an update

I have a Tesla universal wall charger at home, where I tried the same GearIT adapter at 32A and no issues charging.

So I'm going to assume, that the charger I tried this morning is probably faulty

Yup.

In this case, I manually set the amperage to 32A due to max of 40A listed by the adapter manufacturer.

32A will of course draw slower, but no issues since anyways these are L2 only.

As others have said, in 99% of cases, you wouldn't need to worry about toggling that value in the vehicle (or the app).

Interesting. Are you sure that the other one wasn't the 277 volt issue mentioned above since it was in a parking garage?

I wasn't aware of that limitation on some of the Tesla destination chargers until he mentioned that. I might add it to the wiki in the Airbnb thread.

Glad you got it working

I could never get it to work on that specific charger (the only available one) in that garage.

Maybe I'll try again on another available charger there next time I go and report back.

Tesla chargers can be set to allow only Teslas, or only certain vehicles. I turned all that off on my home unit, but I know they can be set like that. I'd try that adapter on a different Tesla destination charger to rule it out. Have you ever seen a non-tesla charging at these locations?

I thought about it as well, and honest answer is that I don't know, since i never observed it that closely before. The garage has a total of 6 chargers, 3 Teslas and 3 Charepoints - I always just use the Chargepoint ones and have not had any issues. Since I got this adapter, I wanted to try it out.

At least now i can rule out that adapter being the issue,. I will try on a different destination charger location sometime this week/weekend and post back.
