Cracked Roof Glass

Gave my R1T it’s first bath yesterday. While washing the roof, I noticed that the glass is cracked all the way from one side to other. Put in a service ticket. Will report back with the replacement service experience.

This is one reason I'm not a fan of a full glass roof. I put things on my roof rack all the time, from lumber to kayaks. I'd be hyper paranoid about something coming loose from the kayak and cracking it.

I dropped my snowboard on my pano roof (previous vehicle) and was pleasantly surprised it didn't break the glass. It hit pretty hard!

I think the "right" hit will still break it, but overall they seem to use pretty strong glass up there.

The early failures may be more to do with manufacturing issues and defects in the glass.

looks mighty sunny. May I ask what the temperature was? And if you noticed it after it was hit with water? The glass is tinted and I assume can get mighty hot. I am wondering if the water was cold enough to cause a shock. I am not saying it should happen, but trying to see what the cause was so others can avoid it.

Not much of an issue for you in sunny Vancouver, but I’d be worried about thermal shock more than an object. I’ve seen sunroofs explode before.

This is more common with smaller sunroofs made from tempered glass. The roof panel is laminated safety glass (like the windshield) and won't explode like that.

Park City, UT. Temps were in the low 80’s. I only noticed it after I’d sprayed water on it and started washing it. But I’m guessing it was there before I started washing it - likely was there at delivery.

I’ve seen chips on windshields take off into long cracks when going thru car washes, but it always started from some kind of existing chip in the glass. I fully expect this to be repaired under warrantee. If not, I will not be a happy camper.

Keep us posted. Regardless of the cause, there is a good chance, someone else will go through the same thing.

Even if they cover it, could you ask what the part and labor would be if you had to cover it?

Lot's of mixed opinions on whether it's necessary, if/how much it's better, and whether or not it could crack the glass (and cause warranty issues). Thanks. Good luck with the repair. It might have been a small chip or crack and then expanded when it heated up in the sun and was hit with cold water.

Mine is not tinted. And I don’t really think it needs it because it’s already pretty dark. I drove 1200 miles in it last weekend and never felt any heat radiating down from the roof.

What's the temps like in your area? I'm in TX and it's 105 today. Not sure how well it would hold up here. Wish Rivian gave us a choice between a glass and solid roof.

Sunny and mid 80’s to low 90’s in the mountains. Upwards of 100+ down in the Salt Lake valley.
