An Update to Gen 2 Cameras

A new capability from a recent OTA optimizes your vehicle’s ADAS performance over time—and reduces camera-related service center visits

Rivian Autonomy Platform gains enhancements with every software update. Over the course of several recent updates, we have introduced a significant new feature to our perception stack: Gen 2 vehicle cameras are now able to calibrate while you drive.

This means your Rivian’s cameras are able to adaptively align themselves, optimizing your vehicle’s driver assistance capabilities and reducing the need for camera-related service center visits.

To work correctly, automated driving features need the vehicle’s cameras to be precisely aligned with the vehicle's driving direction. This helps your Gen 2 vehicle’s cameras provide the onboard perception system with the level of fidelity required to support features like hands-free driving.*

Our Rivian has recently started throwing an error that cameras are not working and driver assistance features are limited. However, the 360 camera feed shows that all the cameras are actually working. Wondering if this update has caused this issue.

The cameras used for the 360 are not the same as the ones used for ADAS.

Rivian has expanded the capabilities of its Autonomy Platform with a new over-the-air (OTA) software update that enables Gen 2 vehicle cameras to automatically calibrate while driving. This continuous self-calibration process enhances advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) performance and reduces the need for camera-related service visits.

Highlights
  • Gen 2 cameras now perform automatic alignment while driving to optimize ADAS accuracy.
  • Static and dynamic calibration continuously adjust camera orientation during stops and at speeds up to 70 mph.
  • Reduced maintenance: fewer service center visits needed for minor alignment issues.
  • Improved reliability across varying conditions, ensuring consistent performance over time.
Continuous Calibration for Enhanced Accuracy
Traditionally, precise camera alignment has been essential for automated driving features such as Highway Assist. Rivian’s latest OTA introduces a new online calibration process that operates in the background, continuously refining alignment as conditions change.

The process includes two key components:

  • Static calibration: occurs when the vehicle is stopped, using visual cues to align cameras with one another.
  • Dynamic calibration: runs at speeds between 5 and 70 mph, fine-tuning camera orientation to the vehicle’s driving direction.
Together, these algorithms ensure optimal perception performance, even as environmental factors like temperature changes or mechanical vibrations subtly shift camera positioning.

Same, it’s usually just a blip for maybe 30 seconds or so and then goes away. But has happened multiple times after this last update.
