Hey yall,

A few owners from the Bay Area Rivian club attended a Trail leaders workshop course hosted and lead by our very own CJ Arnesen. The point of this class was to get a few owners more comfortable and gain experience to lead a group of other owners for off-road adventures.

There’s so many owners I’ve personally met who love their Rivian’s and want to get them off-road but have never off-roaded in their life. That was my exact story before I had my Rivian and why I love doing these types of events.

I hope to encourage others to get off-road and help gain a bit of confidence to do so. You also feel a whole lot more comfortable going in a group, with other Rivian’s with others who are experiencing going off-road for the first time as well.

Whether you have 20’s, 21’s or EVEN 22’s you can go off-roading as evidence of some of the vehicles in my video. I share some things we do, what helps make a trail lead and show a bunch of Rivian’s in their natural habitat.

Hope you guys take something from this video and enjoy! This was a fun one to make!

Also if you live in the Bay Area CJ has his own specific EV off-road training classes that he offers. Be sure to check it out if you're interested.

This is great and exactly what I inquired about back in 2023 when I purchased my AT QM R1S.

I've taken my previous vehicle, 5G 4R TRD Pro, off road several times but wanted to find out if there was anything specific I should be aware of with the R1S. Unfortunately, Rivian didn't offer anything. And I'm still looking for sliders that are compatible with service centers so I've yet to complete an off-road shake down :(

Rivian hasnt formally said what are compatible or
Not but I know they need to lift the vehicle by the mounting puck holes. As far as I know DCE and the Megawatt sliders do not cover these holes. But from what I gathered as long as the pucks arnt covered you should be good.

There have been numerous posts about sliders & service centers.

Basically, the jack pucks used by the SC's are huge so while a standard size jack puck might be able to access the mounting point, the service center's cannot so they'll charge you to remove the sliders or ask you to do it.

And some people haven't had any issues at their respective SC's so it's a crapshoot.

I like how the first one up was a dual motor doing fine on the stair stepper. That proves that even the dual motors are very capable off road.

I hope Gen3's offer a diff locker option. That would make it even better.

The first (R1S) was a quad. We only had one Dual with us that day and that was the LA Silver R1T (The 2nd Rivian up the stair stepper in the video). But it handled it great.

We had a discussion about this how the Dual might actually have more power in some off-road situations. The quad yes has 850+ HP but that’s divided by the 4 motors. The quad will work independently until the computer recognizes the other motor needs more power. The Dual will work together thus having more power available at first vs the quad. It’s an interesting topic but the Dual are so capable.

You are right - I was referring to the LA Silver dual T. Just like mine!

Our local Rivian club just did something like this at Coalmont OHV (Tennessee). 14 Rivians hitting the trails at once was a lot of fun!

I think it’s great many clubs do these sort of things. That’s what makes this community great!

Yea, this was more focused on how to help lead a group but we did a few off-road basics as well. But everytime out is great practice and getting more comfortable.

I went to Hollister about a week after you guys shot the video to test out my new tires. A word of caution to make sure to go into highest suspension before approaching the cement stair climb obstacle. There is a rock on the right side just before the obstacle and I hit the little mud flap in front of the front wheel. It caused a portion of the wheel well liner to break off and I ran it over. I was able to repair with some pop rivets and carbon fiber when I got back home.

Ah man! Hopefully not too much damage. I think during that stair stepper we all ran on high. High has a little bit of give from what we found. What tires are you running now and how did they do on the trail?

I’m sure I would have been fine on high with a spotter but I was solo. I have the new Toyo open country rt pro in factory size. The tires are great so far on and off road after a couple hundred miles. I am driving a rental jeep in Kauai and really missing the Rivian. The jeep has so many buttons, tiny screen, crappy CarPlay, ughhh too many negatives to list. Can’t wait to get home and drive the Rivian again.

The last time I was in Kauai I saw quite a few Rivian’s out there!
