A group of friends and I took a roadtrip out to Sedona a couple weeks ago. It's been a good 20+ years since I have been there. The views, trails and camping are fantastic!

Made a video of the trip here:

That is my old home, back in the late 70's I climbed the hills in my International Harvester Travelall.
Did you use the Jeep trails, or are those now closed to only the Jeep Trail companies?

I'm not aware of trails that are open to only the jeep tour companies. I have done some 4-wheeling in the Sedona area, and have passed by a lot of the pink (and other) tour jeeps on the same trails; I have never seen anything to indicate that there are areas, where they are allowed to go, which are forbidden to others. In fact there are trails that are open only to a limited number of vehicles per day - probably no tour jeeps on those.

What model R1T do you have? Is there anything shown that a dual motor would have trouble with? I need a max pack, so can’t get a quad motor. On the other hand, I have a 4Runner with 2-3” lift and don’t want less off-road capability.

I know not a popular opinion, but I think there is a possibility that the dual motor ends up being a very strong off roader. The differential technology is well known and understood. Also, more people know how to drive that style and feel. It is hard to say, but I am keep my mind open and the reviews should be coming out soon.

I've got a quad motor. Before this I too had a 4Runner, with a 2-3" lift with some slightly larger KO2s. No locking diff, but ATRAC.

I took that 4Runner everywhere, and it performed fantastically. The one area where the Rivian can't quite match is rock crawling, and only in the 0RPM torque application. Momentum solves this (although of course there is damage risk). I would imagine the Dual Motor will still outperform your 4Runner, and if you already hit things at speed, you're going to be very happy.

I will ask, why do you feel you need the max pack?

We have a 2013 Tesla model 3 long range with 70k miles, so I’m familiar with charging. But we live several months per year in an off-grid solar electric house outside Escalante Utah (with the 4Runner). Our solar array generates 8kwh electricity per day, of which we use -3kwh to run the house, so home charging would take weeks if we left the Rivian parked all the time the sun was shining. The nearest fast DC charger is 120 miles away, round-trip would use 240 miles of charge, so anything less than max pack is too restrictive. Only viable options are paying to stay somewhere that has overnight charging, waiting until Escalante gets a RAN charger or a supercharger with Rivian access.

You might be the first person I have heard with a legitimate reason for Max pack (unless we have some EV towers in here).

Depending on the roads/weather, just want to mention that 240 round trip will probably take closer to 280-295 miles+ of your estimated range figure (as i'm sure you know having a Tesla for so long).

I wonder... instead of putting the $ into the max pack, what if you put that money towards a larger solar array? That way it future proofs you as well for next vehicle and more.

Agree. I have about 5 years for Rivian to make the Quads better in those situations where there is hardly any momentum and you have to slowly go thru the obstacle. Rock Crawling or Ascending in Loose Terrain (sand, rocks, mud, etc). I've been stuck in a few situations where a locker would have obviously helped. If Rivian does not nerf the offroad modes available in the Quad I may switch to a Dual once my warranty expires.

It appears they initially wanted to segment the Quad and the Dual modes, maybe they should reconsider that.
