Last Saturday was a new moon and I had some new lenses I wanted to test out. So we hopped in the truck and drove up to RMNP for some astro photography. Before heading to the top of Trail Ridge rd, I got some great shots of bull Elk. It’s rutting season so they’re out strutting their stuff. Afterwards we went to the top of Trail Ridge (highest road in the part) hoping to get a shot of a comet that was supposed to be visible during sunset. That was a failure but I got some good shots obove the clouds. Then down to the lower areas to get some shots of the Milky Way…

The trip in the R1T was Effortless.

I left the house, In Erie, with 89% SoC. It’s 69 miles to the Alpine Visitor Center at the top of RMNP. I think I had 59% SoC when I got there because it was all uphill and I wasn’t going easy on the accelerator. I returned home with something around 40%, mostly because it was all down hill back home and I was going slower due to it being pitch black dark.

Bummer you missed the comet. I bet it would have been a great shot with those lenses!

Beautiful shots! I've been up there but wasn't able to get a glimpse of the shots you got. Perhaps next time.

Nicely done. I enjoyed seeing these. How was the trek up and down in the R1?

Stunning photos. I love night time shots of stars. How long did you have the shutter open?

Your pics are spectacular! Just got my R1S and i live in Evergreen. You've inspired me to make a trip to RMNP.

Nice, what kind of lens are you using? I sometimes struggle to get that many stars without any movement. RMNP is always a great trip!

I don’t have any Astro specific lenses yet but it is a fun style of photography. Here is one from a couple hours south:

I experimented with 15-25seconds based on the ISO setting. I was trying to keep the ISO as low as possible to reduce noise.

I was using Sigma's new f1.4 14mm DG DN Art Lens. IMO you need an aperture of f2.8 at the bare minimum to do astro photography. You also need a wide angle lens. Those let you really get into the longer exposures. I'm also using a Sony A7 IV mirrorless camera.

My Elk photos were done with a Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Sport lens.
