Time to try out the iOS 17 and Xcode 15 betas and coming soon to your iPhone is a trip/charge logger à la TeslaFi (for those that might have owned a Tesla). Just my first pass at a fun project so a lot more work is needed but as of today I can record trips and charges and view them individually or in aggregate (such as monthly energy use or efficiency).

When you fire up My Rivian, you land on the Trips tab with a list of the trips made in the selected period:

With less than one day of trip history the Past Week and Past Month aren't any different but that will change starting tomorrow. Selecting the 10:44 AM trip you can view it in detail:

Right now I am using the Rivian GPS which does not include elevation data so the elevation profile will have to wait for a future update using the phone GPS (and speed as a bonus). There is also no Rivian energy data but they do provide the SoC in tenths of a percent so it is a proxy for the energy used (and so far in the limited testing is accurate with the trip odometer).

I don't wish to make a big post but the Charges tab is just like Trips but having charging related data and graphs. And the Settings tab lets you save and store your settings and data stores as well as select your preferring units, including kWh/100km for the Canadian R1 owners.

Finally the requirements:
iPhone running iOS 17 (beta now, probably late Sept release)​
Rivian account to source the vehicle data​
Distribution will initially be done using the Apple TestFlight app and maybe the AppStore if it ever gets that far. And cell service for the phone and Rivian is required to record trips and charges.

Would you mind sharing where are you getting "energy consumed" from?

I haven't been able to find anything in the API that shows energy usage other than the charge %. Or are you just assuming that 1% = 1.35kwh or some other fixed value?

Any chance this could run in a web browser or on Android? I'd love to get data on my drives and compare with others. (I don't see the same efficiency others report but I sort of wonder if that's because I do lots of short drives or something else.)

BTW, I live only about 20 minutes from Skaneateles. I hear the plans for a service center in East Syracuse are progressing. :)

I determined the scaling value empirically by comparing my results with the vehicle trip odometer. I don't know at this point if it is linear but it is a starting point until I can log new trips under different SoC and see its variance.

kWhUsed = (startingSoC - endingSoc) * SoCAdjustment
5.2 kWh = (58.6 - 53.9) * SoCScaling
SoCScaling = ~ 1.106

Code will be on GitHub when I clean things up. Written in Swift/SwiftUI and uses an InfluxDB cloud server for storage (costs me perhaps $0.50/month). As the Rivian API lacks basic vehicle data a phone is required to get the elevation and speed data.

I had mobile service last week and the tech talked about the Rochester/Buffalo SCs coming first. Amazon has the vans in Rochester already and they took over the old Tesla SC in Henrietta for the SC. Rochester would be nice but Manius/Fayetteville would be even better.

You are using a fixed value to convert % to kwh. So if someone's battery was degraded by 10% more than yours, the app would report the energy usage that was off by 10%.

This isn't a criticism, I don't know that it is possible to do any better with the access Rivian gives us. I was just curious if you had come up with a way to get actual energy consumption stats from the vehicle. Even with a fixed value that may not be super accurate, it is useful for comparing a drive from today with one from last week. But it will be less useful for comparing a drive from this summer with one from next summer when the battery capacity will be different than it is now.

Perhaps allow users to periodically provide calibration data by entering values from the trip meter?

Also, FYI - I am not sure how trustworthy the trip data is. Here is mine, and I am fairly certain that 244.6 mi / 274.0 kwH != 1.16 mi/kwh I also really hope that my efficiency isn't that bad.

Gotta start somewhere, not much to work with State of Charge, Distance To Empty, and Range Threshold to play with. How nice it would be to have the battery State of Health or an Energy to Empty measurements to work with but we just do the best you can with the data points they give us.

As for your trip odometer results, I would lose sleep trying to figure that out but at least the Rivian app has the charge energy added to see if the trip odometer math is a problem.
