/u/CADKai saw this R1S parked in a Costco parking lot in San Jose. They didn't get a glimpse at the brake calipers, but they noticed no yellow accents, and a black line on the R1S logo.

I'm thinking it's either an employee vehicle, or a blackout mod. We've only been told of customer production of DM R1T as far as I'm aware, right?

My neighbor brings Rivian testers home all the time, including the dual motor versions. All of them have Michigan Mfg plates if I remember correctly. Having a regular CA vehicle plate isn't normal for mfg tester plates. Not to mention, with so many waiting for a public delivery of a dual motor Rivian, I'm sure Rivian would have a press release of some sort.

The fact that they are testing it out at Costco makes it official! Has anyone tried parking there on a Saturday? On a more serious note-I'm sure they are testing the dual motor version.

Rivian stated they produced the "first customer dual-motor R1T" about a month ago and said deliveries would begin in June. and as they've done with the quad R1T and R1S, it likely went to an employee "customer" so there are probably some out there. ???

when employees had their quad R1T and R1S before any non-Rivian customers got them, we would regularly see them post on social media but we've yet to see a single dual motor posted other than those spotted in the wild.

that tells me there is a media embargo on them from employees posting. not sure why. maybe they dont want any potentially embarrassing coverage on thrir first in-house built motor.

id guess by end of Aug or early Sep we'll see the first dual to go to a real customer unless they find some major issue with the dual motor configs.
