We drove up from DC to NYC last night and had a real range surprise- in a positive way - with our R1S. The key seems to have been setting Drive + and drafting behind a truck most of the way.

Our average efficiency was 2.45/m, in 45 degree temperatures at highway speeds (65). But for those sections of the drive where we drafted (more than half) we got over 2.8. We were definitely not tailgating the trucks.

- just using the standard Driver+ distances. This is with three passengers and luggage.

Pretty amazing. This implies a 330 mile range with 20 ATs (2.45 x 135 kwh), in cool temperatures, with some judicious and safe drafting. With the 20 ATs!

We stopped just outside NYC in East Brunswick NJ to top off at an Electrify America (which worked perfectly) but still had 100 range left. Probably could have skipped the top off but hard to charge in Manhattan and want to try to avoid stopping on the way back down south Sunday eve.

that's great! good information for road trips. unfortunately in CO for most of my use, drafting a large truck like that would negatively offset any savings when I would be guaranteed to need a windshield replacement.

In the instrument cluster photo, you can see the leaf, which shows it was in conserve. Still great numbers

Watch some video on “drafting” you have to be really close in order to get a real benefit, within a foot or two of the trailer door. Driver+ set to closest proximity isn’t close enough to get effective drafting of a semi In my R1T. I don”t know if the S has a closer setting.
I suspect you had a tailwind and Driver + is more efficient at maintaining speed than your right foot

There was no tailwind. One does not get to 2.8m/kw on a tailwind.

Mythbusters did a whole segment on drafting. 100 feet behind a truck, one gets between a 10 and 15 percent improvement. Driver + set to the minimum safe distance is about 100 feet.

I stand corrected.

In fairness, in Florida certain times of year, tailwinds could definitely have a material positive impact on range.

Just because I feel like being argumentative….

wind speed and direction in Philly yesterday was out of the SW at 20. That’s approximately 30% of your speed. Tailwinds and headwinds most certainly affect range. The reduction of drag when encountering a tailwind is significant. As is increased drag with a headwind.
I”m not gonna debate my favorite nerds results of drafting, If that’s what they come up with I’ll trust them.

Either way, glad you got great mileage.

This thread is going to make me go watch Days of Thunder again to learn about drafting! LOL. :)

(Also because I like being a bit
argumentative) There could have been some wind contribution, no doubt. But when not behind a truck the efficiency dropped right back to the 2.1 to 2.2 range I am used to seeing on the highway.

The biggest problem with trying to maintain 100 feet gaps in NY/NJ/DC is that drivers around here don't hesitate to cut in front of you when there is a 40 foot gap.

Amazing! But don't forget that usable battery is 128.9 kWh.

I believe you mean “ a 4 foot gap”
