VHB won't stick to the carpeting - my other tape did.

I cut the lower tailgate piece off and sliced it into two so that the most rearward piece was long enough to slide under the flap when it closes. I used double sided 3M VHB tape for the rearmost piece and another type of thin but strong double sided tape for the flap. I'll see how it goes and...

I updated the original post with a better fix (see above), so just bumping here for anyone interested. I have a mobile service booked and I will keep that only to ask how they would fix it. Bear in mind I didn't hear any movement or clicking. I just held it with as much pressure as I could for as long as my fingertips could take. Maybe try a bit to the left and right?

Here you go ... you'll feel for the edge of the metal grill. It's only a small lip but enough to get a grip with fingertips.
