Unless you absolutely require your EVSE to be internet-connected, such as if your utility company needs to throttle it or something for time-of-use rates and discounts, a dumb charger is more than enough for an R2. The R2 can handle all the scheduling, current limit, etc..

To that end, I'd say get a Grizzl-E if you can find them (or wait until the political landscape shifts). It's unclear if there will be a tariff doc fee at the Canadian border if you order right now. Chargepoints can also run in a 'dumb' mode, but might require cloud setup first. Emporias require cloud setup but can then be disconnected.

For sure go the hardwired route. I used portable for several years with a nema outlet and while it was good most of the time it did have multiple failures just by the nature of the set up. Hardwired wall charger (I have a Tesla one) has been flawless although now that I have two electric cars I wish I had two charging cables. You can daisy chain together chargers but grizzl makes a dual cable charger too. I can’t speak to the quality or reliability of it though.

Yes, it is. But now Tesla will not sell a new one if you don't have a Tesla with Vin in the account. I have a buddy that is getting an R2 and tried to get the Tesla charger and The Tesla site said not available to non Tesla owners.

I have the Tesla Universal wall connector .. works great .. use it with R1 and R2 .. crazy now their site shows you must own a Tesla with a VIN

You can buy the Tesla charger in Best Buy. The portable charger should be just that, portable. Hardwired is a much safer solution.

The Emporia Pro SANZC02 linked to is really nice. Ended up adding a bunch of sensors to the garage panel to monitor usage of other devices.
Now I have the Emporia set to charge between 9pm and 5am and the Rivian to charge at all times.

+1 on Emporia, have been using the Vue panel monitor for years, and will finally get to use my Classic charger after having it installed 2 years ago once my R2 arrives.

Thanks. Wall Connector is listed as "Sold Out" but you could spend the extra $65 and get the Universal Connector so it's compatible with another EV without NACS....

Yes it is more expensive than buying direct from Tesla. My wife's car is a Mod 3 so I guess that is why it is showing available. I have an early charger from 2016 when we got our first EV. I don't think it is necessary to get a charger with programming capabilities, better to leave that up to the car.

No it's not. It's a different SKU. The $535 Wall Connector is NACS only. The $600 Universal Charger comes with J1772 adapter--that's what makes it more expensive. And it's totally unnecessary for an R2; but handy if you have another EV that's not NACS compatible.

A buddy of mine ( Tesla owner) gave me a brand new boxed Tesla 2 charger that he got when he bought when his wife got a Tesla. I am hearing mixed reviews saying this version wont work with the R2. ( handshake wont work, only for Tesla cars) and that I need the Tesla Universal or V3 charger. I am looking to see if anyone has the V2 Tesla charger and if it works on your R2.

My 2018 HPWC would not charge a NACS KIA, Tesla told me to flip DIP switch #2 to allow it to charge the KIA. Have not tried it yet. Will try it when I get my R2.

Im in the same boat regarding L2 home charging. Fortunately, I have free charging at work so I can get by for a while before committing to anything.

I'm currently leaning toward adding a 14-50 outlet in my garage. I'll use the Tesla Mobile Charger I got on eBay with the 14-50 for 7.6kW charging unless/until I need more. I can then replace the plug with a hardwired EVSE and appropriate breaker. I plan to put the outlet on the other side of the same wall my exterior panel is on, so pulling new wires if necessary shouldn't be a problem, but I could also just oversize them initially. If I go this route, the Mobile Charger will be semi-permanently installed - I won't be plugging/unplugging it except for the occasional road trip.

Honestly, the difference between the 32A max from the mobile charger and 40A or 48A from a hardwired EVSE is not much. Both are more than enough for an overnight 0-70% charge.

Yeah not a big deal for R2. A bigger deal for R1 bc of the massive battery pack. I’m sure you know this as you seem well versed, but just make sure you get a Hubbell 9450A or Bryant 9450FR 14-50 outlet. Industrial grade.

What I would say is that if you don't already have the Tesla charger from a prior EV, Its probably better to get the Rivian one so that its all-in-one app. I have Tesla solar and owned a Tesla prior so no big deal. But if I was starting fresh, I would get a Rivian one. Or I would get another brand that costs less while waiting for the Rivian V2G capability version, won't be cheap.

It does not matter, I have a Tesla car and Powerwall but use Emporia chargers. I do not see any advantage to matching a charger to the vehicle.
