Consider adding glass buyback to your auto insurance. It's like $20 or so every six months, and you would only pay a $100 or $200 deductible to have it replaced without increasing future preimium
Not all insurance have this. State Farm (in CA) does not. So I'm told by my SF agent.

I’m pretty sure in CA with State Farm insurance it is part of the comprehensive coverage, people can check with their agents. It does require the comprehensive deductible, in my case I have 2k deductible so I would not go through insurance if I needed it replaced.

And that's what I mean. There's no special glass policy. Glass damage is treated just like any other. You pay your policy's deductible and SF picks up the difference... if there is any.

Just looked it up. Farmers in CA. Their glass buyback is separate and in addition to the comprehensive coverage. Costs $15 each six months.

I just looked at my policy. I have SF in NY and I have comprehensive glass with no deductible. So that is a good thing I guess.
although they just paid on my total loss claim of my LE R1T

Currently just starting this process now with insurance. They are getting back to me on if rivian will accept their payout amount to fix the glass. And it does appear it has to go to rivian either way to get the cameras calibrated. I was given the option to pay the difference between what insurance will pay out, and what rivian charges so that I can just have Rivian do it.

Anyone else have experience with this?

I've had two chips fixed by Safelite. It worked both times. The cracks are still slightly visible if you're looking for them, but the ~$175 is WAY cheaper than a new windshield.

I also did one windshield replacement through Safelight. I priced out using both Safelight and having Rivian do it. I forget the exact numbers, but it was something like $1,000 cheaper going with Safelight. It was slightly annoying needing to take it in to Rivian for camera re-calibration though. It wasn't a big deal; just a couple-hour service center visit.

I had safelite replace my R1T Gen1 windshield this spring and they were able to do my calibration at the store. They did say the Gen2 were a much more complicated recal so maybe not all franchise locations are certified. My Safelite shop is only couple miles from the Rivian service center.

Safelite now claims they can do the ADAS calibration on Rivians, however they charge a fortune for it. When I had to replace mine last fall, the price difference between safelight and Rivian SC was about $100 all in. For the difference, it was worth getting the real OEM glass versus whatever Safelite gets.

I'm glad I didn't go Safelite because this year I tried to have them do a replacement on my Mazda with automatic braking, they added that calibration to the quote after I scheduled it, then claimed they could do it properly in my driveway, which is not true as it's a static calibration.

Cancelled and went with a different local that was 30 percent cheaper all in and didn't play any bait and switch games.

The windshields are odd. A lot of people say they are fragile and in 3.5 years I do have several small pits in mine.

About 3 weeks ago we were driving on the freeway in the far left lane, a 2x6 about 18 inches long cam flying over the medium, it was too close for me to do anything but put my hand in front of my face. It somehow flipped around so the 6 inch portion hit directly in front of the drivers side, made a huge noise and bounced over the top of the car.

I was thinking this is going to be expensive, to my surprise, it did not hit the hood, did not contact the roof, only bounced off of the windshield. I was going about 75 mph, board was coming the other way, not sure how fast. I have no idea how the windshield survived that hit, it left a smudge on the glass but that was able to wipe off. I’m sure that was a 1 in a million outcome but it certainly did its job that day.
Damn you got super lucky. Glad you and your Rivian survived this close encounter. I’ll share this experience with my wife who teaches AP physics. She’s always looking for new problems involving forces to incorporate into lessons and tests.

Does your insurance include the OEM equip. coverage? If so, they have to cover Rivian OEM parts and labor at SC. If not, I'd get a detailed estimate from Rivian SC, share with your insurance adjustor first, and see how much exactly they agree to cover. There is wiggle room on both sides and to me it's better to quantify the difference upfront before any work is done.

Yes, this is what I did with my USAA insurance. I got written quotes from SafeLite ($1400), Rivian ($2600 with calibration) and the local Rivian-certified collision center ($4800) ALL for the same services except SafeLite couldn’t do the ADAS calibration. I went with Rivian SC and paid the $1200 different plus my $200 deductible.

So there aren't any huge objections to Safelite doing the windshield repair?
