For anyone expecting the R2 to deliver 330 miles in everyday driving, here’s the bigger picture.

The issue isn’t that the R2 is inefficient. It’s that EPA range ratings have changed significantly over the last few years, and those changes tend to favor vehicles whose efficiency drops rapidly at higher highway speeds—exactly what happens with taller, boxier SUVs like the R1 and R2.

The first-generation R1 used a much more conservative EPA certification approach that historically tracked real-world highway driving fairly well. Beginning with the refreshed Gen 2 R1, Rivian adopted a newer EPA methodology that produces substantially higher EPA numbers while doing little to change what owners actually experience at 70–80 mph.

The Numbers Tell the Story

What’s Changed?

On paper, Rivian appears to have improved efficiency dramatically:
  • Gen 1 R1: ~2.47 EPA mi/kWh
  • Gen 2 R1: ~2.9 EPA mi/kWh
  • R2: 3.75 EPA mi/kWh
That’s an apparent ~20% improvement from the original R1 to the Gen 2 R1.

Yet real-world highway testing simply doesn’t support anything close to that magnitude of improvement.

The original R1 generally returns around 2.2–2.3 mi/kWh at 70 mph.

The refreshed Gen 2 R1 is…also around 2.2–2.3 mi/kWh.

The R2 appears somewhat better—roughly 2.65–2.85 mi/kWh based on early testing—but nowhere near the 3.75 mi/kWh implied by its EPA rating.

The Underlying Issue

The newer EPA certification approach places much greater emphasis on lower-speed driving and comparatively little emphasis on sustained freeway speeds above roughly 50–55 mph.

That matters because aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed, while the power required to overcome it rises approximately with the cube of speed.

For vehicles with a relatively tall, upright profile—like the R1 and R2—energy consumption climbs rapidly once cruising speeds reach 65–80 mph.

As a result:
  • Around town, the EPA numbers can be quite representative.
  • On long interstate trips, those same vehicles lose efficiency much faster than the EPA rating suggests.

The Bottom Line

The R2 is likely to be an outstanding vehicle.

But buyers expecting 330 miles at normal interstate speeds may be disappointed.

Based on the available highway testing, a more realistic expectation appears to be:
  • ~235–250 miles at a steady 70 mph
  • More at slower speeds.
  • Less at 75–80 mph, in cold weather, or with headwinds and elevation gain.
The key takeaway isn’t that Rivian built an inefficient vehicle.

It’s that the EPA rating system has evolved in a way that can overstate real-world highway range for aerodynamic SUVs, and the R2 appears to be the clearest example yet of that growing disconnect.

So, the EPA range is closer to how most people actually drive their vehicles instead of the one or two road trips per year. Seems like they should have separate city and highway ranges.

I don’t think we should generalize/stereotype, I believe there are many people who would end up driving daily in the 70-80 mph range…in fact, the early Rivian Trackr/Roamer data is pointing to average MPK in 2.6-2.8 range, which is near the 70 mph efficiency band. This is very interesting as it’s approximately 18% more efficient than average R1 efficiency. If we look only at CdA differences between R1/R2 we get that the R1 is around 17% less, primarily due to smaller frontal area…so we can likely expect the averages to fall into 2.7 MPK over time….

Every EV road trip I've taken (around 30k miles worth at this point) has left me feeling that the whole "range estimate" discussion is fatally flawed, to your point.

What the EPA needs to do is establish two different values, like they did years ago for petrol powered vehicles... Range with 100% "city" driving, and range with 100% "highway" driving.

This blended quasi-scientific number they came up with out of the blue makes no sense, especially considering the decades they've been evaluating petrol cars across two metrics.

The range discussion also fails to take into consideration the dynamics of driving EV's. If I roll into a petrol station with 10 miles to empty, no big deal. If you're on the freeway and the nav system in an EV says you'll arrive at the charging station with 10 miles range, chances are you're going to look for a sooner place to charge... I don't want to get to a fast charging location and find its full and I have to wait, or the stupid chargers are broken/vandalized/etc, and then be stuck.

Same on fueling the vehicle to full.... It takes a glaciers' age to charge an EV from 80% to 100%, and we're told it's "bad" for the battery... No one hesitates to fill a petrol vehicle to full (except from the sticker shock of the price these days)

There’s an ultimate irony in filling an ICE vehicle with dinosaur fluid. That energy began with ancient sunlight, spent hundreds of millions of years being buried, compressed, transformed, and trapped underground; only to be pumped into a tank in a few minutes and burned once, with most of its energy escaping as heat rather than moving the car.

Yet somehow, stopping for 15 minutes to charge an EV with energy captured almost directly from today’s sun is considered unbearably inconvenient.

The problem is their weighted average model, they still use a 45%/55% blended pattern when calculating highway range.

I know every time I charge my R1S to 100% it says "410" miles of range, even if I've been on the freeway driving for days on end.

The nav system knows better - generally it plans my charging stops every 130 miles or so.

Agree! My dad was in the oilfield business his whole life, dinosaur fluid put food on the table and a roof over my head, and yet I love EV's.

My criticism of the overall experience is intended to highlight the opportunity to "do better" (not that anyone cares what I have to say...lol)

I'm happy charging for 30-40 minutes if that's what it takes. I'd prefer not to get into screaming fights with Karens in Tesla charging stations if I can avoid it when I take up two spots. I'd prefer not to have to take a bio break behind a pad mount transformer while charging in the middle of nowhere because the charging station is miles from a restroom/restaurant/etc.

I, too, appreciate the em dash and find it a crime against writing that AI gets to use then but we humans need thirteen fingers, an extended keyboard and twelve different keystroke permutations to avail ourselves of their parenthetical, emphatical dashy goodness.
