Has anyone tried R2 charging on Gen 2 Tesla Wall connector ?

I’ve seen some mixed messages but no one actually saying if they have tried charging their R2 on the gen 2 Tesla wall connector.

I’ve read about the dip switches to put Gen 2 into legacy mode but that seems like it might only work if you’re using a NACs to CCS,etc.

Anyone tried this yet?

Seems like gen 3 universal is the way to go but I currently have a gen 2 in place…

Follow up question would be if anyone has upgraded a Tesla Gen 2 to a Gen 3 and if the wiring set up is similar enough that I could DIY it?

my deliver is in about two weeks, so I’m trying to sort this out.

The consensus is Gen 2 mobile and wall connectors don't work due to the communication protocol even though the plug obviously fits. Sometimes they work for a bit but other times they're finnicky so it seems unreliable at best. I'd try it yourself just to be sure though. I think the wiring should be pretty easy to swap out. Wiring the Gen 3 is very easy and they have plenty of pictures and videos of it.

Thanks, yeah,thats what I’ve heard but haven’t seen anyone say they tried it first hand.

I’m thinking after five years of the gen two might be time to upgrade anyways…just trying to get sorted before delivery!

I have two gen 2 HPWCs ... the only issue I have is the plug is very tight in the R2, so the opposite problem. They charge fine, just the fit is off.

I have them daisy chained, but I don't recall changing any dip switches for a legacy mode since I set them up 6 years ago.

afaik it's actually the gen 1/2 DCFC super chargers that are the problem. The mobile and HPWC just use the standard AC J1772 communication (with Tesla plug/handle).

Edit: Reading the manual and forums I can see the dip switch #2 supposedly changes the protocol. I am sure I have mine in Tesla (ON) since the manual says to leave it on ... but it does explain why when I use an adapter for the R1 it fails to connect initially and then a few seconds later connects. One forum post said that if it fails to communicate digitally it will fall back to j1772 automatically. That appears to be only any issue when using an adapter.

Supposedly dip switch #2 just disabled the digital handshake and goes directly to J1772 mode.

The long story short is that for the R2 which has no adapter, charging works with no issues afaict. I suspect the R2 must be able to negotiate this digital handshake where the R1 cannot, but falls back to J1772 successfully, and that makes some sense given j1772/ccs are physically different AC/DC pins and the R2 now has shared AC and DC pins and so must be able to use the digital communication pin to know if taking and AC or DC charge.

I've used these the charge S3X and Y, R1T, F150 Lighting, and R2.

Ok, that sounds promising. Are you going to stick with the gen 2 set up despite The fit issue ? It’s just a little snug ? Don’t think it will cause any issues over

Yes, I plan to keep my current setup. I tried a couple superchargers and they didn't have the same "sticky" problem.

I am hoping that over time things just get a bit more worn in and smoother to plug/unplug.

I would love to learn if others with gen 2 HPWCs also have tight fits on R2, or if it's just my R2.

Well, guess I need to install my new wall connector... I bought it last year because the handle on my 10 year old gen 2 is broken, but I just keep gluing it back together and using it because I don't want to do the installation of the new one as long as the old one works
