Hey everyone, I'm looking for guidance on car camping accessories. I take my young boys car camping a handful of times/year, and I'm ~2 months away from getting an R2.

Does anyone have experience or opinions on the following:

Air mattresses
notes: I currently use a rectangular air mattress, which doesn't fit well in my EV9, resulting in terrible sleep. Seems like getting a mattress that fits around the wheel wells would be the way to go. But what do people use for a fitted sheet? Also, if anyone's used HEST or Luno, do you feel the seam in the middle?

Window shades

Other
  • Any other must-have accessories?
  • What about small refrigerator that fits in the storage compartment?
  • Note: I have an induction cooktop already, which works well

There are dozens of threads about camping, mattresses, fridges, RTT's and the like - Enough to keep you busy until you get your R2.

If you’re planning to sleep inside the car and carry all the cargo, that might be tough for more than two people. It’d already be a stretch in an R1S.

I’d recommend figuring out tent or roof top tent setup instead

I bought absolute bargain basement Amazon air mattress (with built in foot pump) and "warm weather" sleeping bag; along with full-around window shades for a drive across the country last year in a Model S. (I had to buy "minimal" so they'd fit in my carryon flying out to the vehicle.)

The Model S wasn't great for car-camping, missing a truly flat surface when you lay the rear seats down, and not *QUITE* long enough for six-foot-zero me. An R2 should have both.

Rivian sells the HEST mattress specially fit for the R2. I have used a HEST mattress in a rented camper-van, and it was very comfortable. Note that HEST are *NOT AIR MATTRESSES*. They are foam. So they do take up far more space, but they supposedly roll up to fit in the frunk, IIRC.

For the all-around shades, I'm sure someone will release some. The ones I bought worked remarkably well - when put in properly, they let almost zero light in.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZ6VR8V3 is what I got for the Model S, plus roof shades that appears to no longer be listed.

I do see a set of all-around (minus roof) shades for R2: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H6L38GCM

The air mattress was "fine" within the constraints of the vehicle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D2NQ4GQZ
The sleeping bag was a bit "clingy", I'd go for something better for serious car camping: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0756TV6XG

I got something like these for the sunroof. I can't find the exact link. I don't use a mattress, just a sleeping bag is fine for me. Have fun!

I use a DeepSleep Overland mattress in my Bronco. It is very comfortable.

Huge fan of REI, but I have found campsaver.com significantly less expensive for the same Exped products.
Have not tried that site. Thanks, I’ll check it out.
I do like having local store for returns plus the percent back in coupon for next year for members.
Also, I see 20% off Hest products at REI this week, although they won’t have the R2 specific one…

Your camp kitchen looks amazing. Do you have build specs? I have an R1T, and it looks like maybe with some kitchen top adjustments I might fit the frunk? Anyway super impressed, it looks really clean.

Its all custom made by my self so just my own specs/build process here.

https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...chen-custom-diy-field-testing-complete.12430/

My reqs were:

  • Integrates with full spare tire (no need to remove)
  • Off the Shelf Components and can be replaced easily
  • Water Pump with proper pressure (meant for a shower)
  • Water pump is battery operated can be used to wash pets etc with enough pressure as well.
  • One plug integration just plugs into car outlet via extension cord
  • Legs unscrew and fold up in cargo area above tire below kitchen.
  • Cargo Cover goes on surface remains flat
  • Setup and take down is under 2 minutes
