Would you go with 20" wheels or 21" wheels on Launch Edition R2?

My Mini Countryman came with Pirelli tires, and they sucked! Wore out so fast it was a joke.

I will never buy a car with Pirelli tires again.

Bottom line I want the 20” wheels for tire choices down the line

...right now there's only one tire option for the 21" ...
Agree and that is #1 issue with my 2023 R1T. Its 21 inchers, no choice in tire. BUT what if we order my wife's upcoming R2 with 20"? Can I switch them onto my R1T?? Will that work?

That might actually create a marital dispute. ;-P

You could probably install them on the R1 but they are 32" diameter so it'll be a bit smaller compared to the 33/34" R1 diameter tire.

I'll stick with the included 21" and when those wear out, I'll see what the market offers then. If I think the offers are too limited or expensive by that time, I'll consider swapping for 20" and get new wheels if necessary.

The sidewall on the 20" will be larger, no? More cushion and less likely to damage via potholes than 21".
Yes, and I believe it makes a difference. More sidewall = better ride, handling, and protection from pothole-type damage. I am going with the 20s.

And curbs. Plus, if you look at 20 and 21 options for Premium trim—both shod with Pirelli MS all-season—there is no difference in EPA estimated range (330). If range/efficiency is preferred, swap the BFGs out at your tire shop when they are done. Easy. Peasy. No overthinking needed.

I'm going with performance - Launch Edition, hopefully. I much prefer the look of the 20s "Black Sand" rims. I'll prpbably replace the BFGs with some Michelin AS when the time comes. Count me as another non-fan of Pirelli tires.

So what are the chances the minute I order mine with 20 inch wheels that Hankook or Bridgestone will come out with perfect tires for the 21 inch rims?

I suppose I should doubt big R2 sales might convince them to go 21. But R1 sales were too low to move the needle.

HRE makes their rims for high-end cars a few miles from here. Maybe I'll drop by and pick up a set of seconds for a big discount? I'm joking, I don't have $6k plus for rims, but the ones I saw on a friend's HRE were gorgeous!

I think the question is which rims do you like more? Ignore the aftermarket tire question. I think people (this forum) are making too big of a deal on that.

I like the 20" rims more so I'm going with that. I don't want an SUV with massive pothole rims, not to mention I don't even like the look of the 21" rims. I'd actually prefer 19" if I could get them (not the standard trim ones). From every review the AT tires are mild and not noisy also. They are also a Rivian special compound and not the same as the aftermarket AT version.

And that reminds me, at my test drive last week, one of the senior people there told me the 20 inch tires are better built and likely to last longer. I know I was surprised to see the tires weren't Perelli. But maybe I was looking at different tires inside the shop.

So, after doing back-to-back drives int he R2 with 21's then 20's. I decided on 21's when I placed my order yesterday. The 20's had such an inferior ride quality it was so strange. At speed the car had a strange audible hum in the cabin, and you could feel every little road imperfection. The 21's were so smooth. this was quite shocking.
