Don't the license plate needs to be moved to be visible?
Probably, but I've never been stopped for it. You'll see some cars without plates at all (and no temp paper either) driving around... doesn't seem to be much of an issue around here.

Absolutely. Even if I never use it, just knowing it’s back there under the cargo floor will make me feel better about my life.

I plan on buying the compact spare. I may also get a tow hitch tire carrier and a full size spare if I find myself doing a significant amount of off road travel, which is the plan. I wouldn't want to be lugging around the tire carrier and full size spare all the time though, with the associated inconvenience for rear hatch access, hence the likelihood of getting both.

The full size rear tire carrier swings out so you can still use the hatch. It swings very easily too.

Based on your comment about where you live I would get it. for me personally I haven't had a spare tire in a car for many years now, BMW, Audi, Rivian and plenty others don't provide one. I have used the tire sealant kits they have provided more than once. It worked well enough not just to get home but to order the replacement online, get it delivered to a shop and it installed, while still driving.

This bring up a question for me. I do not own a Rivian and my personal driver is old 2010 Ford AWD. We also had a Subaru Outback a few years ago.

If you get a flat on a Rivian do you have replace all 4 tires like the Outback and my Ford?

In the old days, before AWD or on 4WD you could just replace the one or two depending on wear.

I got one for my R1S because I had the 21" tires, and they aren't generally available in a pinch. At least the spare buys you some time.

I plan on fixing that issue by getting the 20s this time around, and no spare. I do not plan on road tripping the R2 or really pushing its adventureability, I live in Jersey and am never too far from civilization.

What about the thought of getting run flat tires on the R2? Seems to me that would negate the need for a spare or any tire equipment.

There are no run flat tires available for 255/60R20's (nor the 21's)

I realize you don't have a crystal ball, or work for the tire companies, but do you think there is a possibility of some manufacturer making run flats for the Rivian?

Please help me understand this. If I purchase this spare, I'll need a compressor to air up or a can of fix a flat, then I'll need a jack and tire wrench to change out the flat.
After I drive to a tire place for repair or replacement what do I do? Can this spare be aired-down and put back into the spare tire mount? I'm hoping for $750, it's reusable.
I also carried a compressor and patch kit when I had my Tesla but I always had that little worry about being stuck on the side of a freeway with a flat.
I used to have a dune buggy that I did a lot of exploring with and believe me had plenty of flats out in the boonies! Thanks

Based on what I've seen and some research, I think the compact spare Rivian in listing as an option for the R2 is like the one they sell for the R1s. It is tiny in its deflated state, but the picture on the configuration tool, shows it inflated. Not until you click on the tire selection info button do you see it deflated and in the rear lower storage space of what looks might be an R1 and the trunk insert doesn't look like the pictures of the R2 storage space.

Also, it mentions a jack and wheel chocks are included but no mention of an inflator. R1 owners have their inflators build in to their vehicle but R2 doesn't have that luxury, so I'm assuming we will have to buy one. I doubt a can of fix-a-flat would inflate it. I've seen posts of R1 owners that have used this spare with success and it can be collapsed (by pulling out the valve stem) and reused.

I'm really hoping that Rivian sees this gap for R2 owners and includes some sort of inflator, but we will have to see once they actually start delivering the spare kits. If they don't, I'll be investing in the best 12v inflator you can get.

“Hey guys, let’s brainstorm how we can nickel and dime out consumers for every last dollar!”

So the spare is a 20” after inflated that is able to be hid for $755.

So that telling me to go with the 20” rims for the extra $1000.

Safety items that have been standard for the past 100 years, yes crazy like BMW asking a monthly subscription for the heated seats they already installed?

Crazy how Tesla and other EV make it a prideful *psychological event “got to have that, and that, and that, Ching Ching, Ching, Ching Ching $$$.

*Almost like grown up version of that grappling hook machines trying to get the little ball for a dollar each time only to fail and put another dollar in over and over and over.

Oh, say all that to say, YES I will put my $2 in the machine to get the spare and 20” rims.

Fairly sure it's actually a 19" rim for the spare on the R2.

I have the compact spare in my R1S. I have never had to use it, but I love that it gives me that security in case I ever need it. I will definitely be getting it with the R2.

It would be awesome if the R1 spare is exactly the same as the R2, but I doubt it.

The R1 has 33'' tires and the R2 has 32'' tires.
