Home charger install: I just got a quote to install the Rivian charger at home for $1465. Seems awfully high to me, considering the breaker box is in the same garage as where the charger will go. Anyone have other costs for comparison?

BTW, quote was from independent electrician.

well, I agree it is high, but I think that is the going rate in the DMV for electrical services. This includes materials? 6 AWG is going for a few dollars a foot plus the conduit and the breaker could be anything from $20 to $60. How far is the run? internal or external to a wall?

Thanks. Yeah, wanted to hear from those in DMV as I’m sure it’s more here. Run is from a breaker box in the garage, up to ceiling, around to front of garage, and down to where the charger will be. Probably 40’ total. Can all be on wall since it’s just a garage.

Try Beacon Electric. Shouldn't cost more than $600-$700 unless it's a complicated install. Although tbh, most "handymen" can do this kind of work for less, if you want it under the table. ?

@Oldsmobile_Mike That’s what I thought. My handyman (certified electrician) wired my porch for two overhead space heaters and two fans, requiring install of new 240 circuits, and fishing the wire through various walls and crawl spaces, and it cost about the same as hooking up one EV charger that’s in the same room as the breaker? (Alas, he’s dealing with ill family members indefinitely so unavailable.) You’re the second person to recommend Beacon so I reached out to them to come give me a quote. Thank you!

Did you confirm your breaker box has free spots? Is it able to accommodate an extra 60A circuit? How much is the feed to your house? And how much of that feed is available at the garage? (assuming you have a separate detached garage)

Yes, confirmed all of that. Panel is only 6 years old, added when addition put on house, had to upgrade power to the entire house and add this breaker panel. Plenty of space and power available now.

Well, I think it is probably a little high, but availability in the area could be an issue. If you get someone cheaper I would micromanage it and make sure the breaker is the size you want, they place it where you want, make sure you understand how to set the dip switches, etc so you can check their work a little. Is there any interest in you doing the install? Sounds pretty straightforward, but if you're not comfortable with it I think the only advise is to shop it hard and call like 20 places and find out when, how much, etc.

Update: Beacon just quoted $1950 for the install. And that’s without a surge protector. Excellent response time, really professional the whole way through scheduling, inspecting the gear, inspecting the existing wiring and planning out how they would do it. Seemed like a good company to work with. Just seems like everyone might be charging an “EV premium” with these. I don’t know of any other 240v install that cost this much unless it requires running it clear across the house.

Back in June, my install cost $750 which included a new 240V/60A line from my breaker box in the basement to the garage. I'm in Harford Co. and I used the same local company that did the new construction wiring on my house 17.5+ years ago.

Update: Just had JQ Electric do the install. New 60amp breaker, 6AWG wire, in conduit, everything appearing to work flawlessly. Less than half the cost of the other quotes I got. Found them through Angi app.

EV customer gauging is a real thing.

I just joined the group and took delivery of my R1T on Saturday. I got a quote for $650 installed from KCL Electric. I will say it is a very simple install in my garage, that quote includes the $300 for permit pull and handling, so I think I'm getting a good deal.

Yeah, that’s about what I paid. If they have rep for quality work, go with them.
