Home charger install: I just got a quote to install the Rivian charger at home for $1465. Seems awfully high to me, considering the breaker box is in the same garage as where the charger will go. Anyone have other costs for comparison?

Update: Beacon just quoted $1950 for the install. And that’s without a surge protector. Excellent response time, really professional the whole way through scheduling, inspecting the gear, inspecting the existing wiring and planning out how they would do it. Seemed like a good company to work with. Just seems like everyone might be charging an “EV premium” with these. I don’t know of any other 240v install that cost this much unless it requires running it clear across the house.

Back in June, my install cost $750 which included a new 240V/60A line from my breaker box in the basement to the garage. I'm in Harford Co. and I used the same local company that did the new construction wiring on my house 17.5+ years ago.

Update: Just had JQ Electric do the install. New 60amp breaker, 6AWG wire, in conduit, everything appearing to work flawlessly. Less than half the cost of the other quotes I got. Found them through Angi app.

EV customer gauging is a real thing.

So next week I will be in Corolla, NC for annual beach week. Am contemplating taking the R1T out on the sand. have also seen pics / heard horror stories of R1Ts digging themselves into the beach and having to be towed. Any experience in this group? Any suggestions or tips?

Don't get into super soft sand, air down, and take some recovery boards with you.

My brother lives in NC and had an old crappy Jeep for riding on the beach. He never had a problem, honestly.
If there's already a path (places where you can see others were driving), it's probably safe to drive there. If not, just take it easy. Also, if you do start to get stuck, don't think applying speed will help--you'll start to dig. At the first sign of struggle, try reversing and working your front tires back and forth. If you start to dig, air down a bit more, and get our your recovery boards.

It always helps to take a friend with kinetic recovery straps, soo.

Pretty much everything above.... and when he says air down, air DOWN. Like to 20 PSI or lower. Honestly, it is harder to get stuck than people would have you think unless you don't drop the psi and you are really racking the vehicle around in deep, soft sand. Stay away from the water of course because you could get stuck and all that salt on the car, ugh, and use sand mode. After, make sure you air back up as the handling and tires on the road at low PSI would be rough. Also recommend going to a self car wash and giving it a rinse. Make sure to pay attention to the wheels. Sometimes moist sand will get in the wheels and then when it sits overnight it will dry and acts like a giant wheel weight and throws the whole truth out of balance (I had a bad experience where I parked my explorer overnight years ago after beach driving and then spent 30 minutes at the sonic on the mainland digging hardened sand out of the wheels with a spoon/straw)

Thank you, this is very helpful! - I have done offroading more than a few times and never had an issue, but then I was with friends and also just have a higher experience / comfort level with that versus sand. I do have recovery boards and an air down valve.
We’re in McLean, Va.
Delivered in June, 2022 after four years and three days.

Congrats! Hopefully the build quality was good? And your R1 was worth the wait! Early reservation holder and still waiting for my R1T (delayed order until Tonneau Cover back in Production).

Hey All! Looking for tire rotation recommendations that aren't the Gaithersburg SC. I'm due but don't have much trust in shops. I have a set of pucks. Anyone had a good experience getting their tires rotated in the DMV?

You don't like the Gaithersburg SC, or they're just too far scheduled out? Just curious, as I switched my SC from Brooklyn to Gaithersburg and just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

(Sorry I can't help with your initial query--I do my own rotations).
Don't forget Mobile service is a thing!

Since you have the pucks, you can take it to any reliable shop. Just call and ask if they have experience or would be willing to do the rotation service.

Many recommend Discount Tire but there are few in the area. Other options I can recommend:

Ptuning, GTPeace, Loudoun County Exotics are a few good shops. If you’re in western Loudoun, you can go see my buddy in Bluemont. He has a shop at his house.

If it’s just a rotation (they don’t have a mount/balance machine), I recommend AutoTech of Tysons. Small family owned shop that’s been there for 40+ years before Tysons was big. Super straightforward, transparent, and won’t give you the run-around.

Tell them Thompson sent you.

I have a Rivian loaner ‘hack’ for us local to the DMV. Our Rivian was dropped at Gaithersburg SC yesterday for a laundry list of items that didn’t qualify for mobile service.

The Gaithersburg SC does not offer Rivian Loaners at this time (if they do have any; it’s only a few). Joel, our service advisor says they’re so new that they haven’t adopted loaners. Rest assured, a local Enterprise would offer a vehicle. Seeing that our truck will be with the SC for a few weeks, we were hoping for an electric loaner of some sort, which the particular Enterprise location does not offer. What I did find out is that the Enterprise Airport locations DO have a handful of R1S available, through the exotics department. Airport locations are strictly retail - they don’t support dealership and insurance negotiated rates, only standalone locations can support Rivian’s negotiated loaner rate.

Here’s the hack:

Find an Enterprise (probably Exotics) location that offers a Rivian. if the location that has a Rivian IS an Airport location, find the closest standalone location. Ask the standalone location to pull up your Enterprise reservation number, and then request Enterprise to confirm with Rivian that the rental will be at the pre-negotiated rate. Once confirmed, they will transfer thr Rivian to the standalone location for pickup. Took a few hours but our location was able to get this done swiftly. The only drawback to this is that the Rivian must be returned to the location in which he rented it from; you CANNOT return it to the SC.

For reference, I used the Dulles Airport Enterprise location (the Exotics line has the Rivians), and the standalone Enterprise location at 202 Lane Ct., Sterling, VA.

I now have near brand new R1S while our R1T is in for repairs.

@connoisseurr this is a great post. Thank you for sharing! I learned two things 1) your hack - which is brilliant and 2) Enterprise Exotics actually has Rivians!

I tried this In Dallas and they said they negotiated rate was $150. Which seems like the regular rate. I already have an open rental authorized for $68 per day - SUV. They want me to close it and have Rivian send a new authorization for $150. Do you have any tips on how to proceed? This is a stand alone exotics location with a Rivian . Not sure if it’s a truck or SUV. Does that make a difference with the negotiated rate?
connoisseurr
connoisseurr
@MidnightRivian Are you getting this information from the exotics location, or a standalone non-exotics (non-airport) Enterprise location? That's the root of the hack - airport locations won't work with contract rates.
Sorry wasn't reading it correctly. Find another local Enterprise location (non-exotics and non-airport) and see if they can find the proper negotiated rate.
MidnightRivian
MidnightRivian
@connoisseurr got it. This is a stand alone location that also has exotic rentals. I’ll try to find another enterprise that is stand alone and not exotic / airport with a Rivian.
connoisseurr
connoisseurr
@MidnightRivian well, you might not have to... if your exotics locations is at an airport, they won't work a contracted rate. If it's a standalone exotics location, maybe their rates are different. I had to have a non-exotics, non-airport location transfer the Rivian from the exotics location to their site, and then work the pickup from there. That's what you may have to do. Find the next closest non-airport Enterprise location to the exotics location and see what they can find out for you.

Waving 'hi' from Northern VA. I commute pretty much daily between Manassas Park, Tysons Corner, and Gainesville. Have put 3k miles on my R1T since picking it up March 31st. No significant issues, best truck I've ever owned. Seen a few other Rivian's on the road, especially in the Tysons area. Was pretty funny to see one right behind me the other day - confusing to see those oval headlights in my rearview mirror, LOL. Hello, whoever you were!

Would be great to do some Rivian meetups someday, if my work schedule allows. Safe travels!

Hi all - I live in Sterling and have had my R1S for about 60 days now. Look forward to connecting with other NoVa/DC Rivian owners.

I am trying to figure out if my AC is a bit off? Or if I/m experiencing the same as others. My AC is super loud and vibrates the accelerator and brake pedals and is not very cold. Anything above fan setting 3/4 and its super loud. And I need to keep it at temp = LO for it to cool the R1S. Anyone else experiencing the same? Otherwise, minus a small popping noise coming from the driver's side floor between the footer and speaker that has seemed to go away, I'm totally enjoying my R1S. Freaking rocket ship.

PS - I bought a set of cross-bars (2) from the Gear shop, but I'd like to add the 3rd one to the roof. Was wondering if anyone wanted to split the 2-pack?

Per some comments in the forums, make sure your A/C is on *recirculate*. Also, I keep mine on *Low* temp and turn my blower on max about 5-10 mins before I leave so by the time I drive away it's cool and I can cut the blower back to min which isn't nearly as noisy.

Thanks all - not sure if this is good that many of us have the loud noise, but good to know it's not a me thing. I raised the ticket, but there is no open service slot at the Gaithersburg until mid Sept. but I've been calling every 3 days or so to try to get better Cust service.

I've been waiting to spy a limestone R1T in the flesh in the DMV area for years. I have had GW on order since 2021 but Limestone looks so different in photos that I didn't want to switch without seeing it.

Didn’t toss a pic with my previous post, but holler if you see us rolling around Northern VA (typically between Purcellville and Reston). We’re also in SoDel a bit (Fenwick area).

I normally throw a couple hazard flashes when I see another R1.

We ride off but mostly on the fine rural roads here in western Howard Co.
We have hundreds of MTBs in our shop
after 10 500 - 900 mi road trips in the 14 months we’ve had the LG model t we’ve seen but a dozen other S or T.

Hello from Northern VA! In the Leesburg, Purcellville area if anyone is familiar. Got our R1S June 1st and loving it! It’s our family hauler, and yes it can do 3 car seats across the middle row nicely.

We went to Easton MD Thursday and came back today. Pulled the trailer to see how things went. At first the 'puter said we'd get half the mileage, but it quickly ramped up to maybe 75% of the non-towing range. Still, before crossing the Bay Bridge in summer traffic we fueled up at the EvGo fill up station at the Outlet malls. One hour later and 50 more Kw in the batteries we were on our way.

Wayno here. Had the R1T for a month now. We live in Davidsonville Maryland and are seeing more and more Rivians on the road. Hilariously, when I called my insurance company the local Erie agent I worked with also has a Rivian. We use this as a truck.... It says it will tow 11,000 pounds, so this was one of our first tests. 835 ponies is impressive!

@Steve A. I don't blame you one bit. I never had a facebook but only created one for Marketplace, and now use it for Tesla and Rivian groups. It's sucking me in.

Once we have some concrete dates setup for a local GTG, I'll post up here.
