  • R1S Dual Max Performance: Nokian LT3s, 65-70 MPH average speed: 231 miles total range
  • R1T Dual Max, Nokian R5s, 65-70 MPH average speed: 205 miles total range
All data automatically collected via electrafi.com for this winter's driving.

Pretty sad, but about what I expected. It's been cold. The R1T has been driven in even colder temperatures which likely explains the 25 mile range delta. Perhaps the R5s are a bit softer, too. The cars get at least 8% more range when driven at 50-55 MPH. It's hard to get exact comparisons because of the temperature differences.

What size wheels and tires?
The R1S are LT3s on 20” rims. The LT3s are roughly the diameter of the stock all terrains.

The R1T has the R5s, which are 21” tires on 20” rims. So, very close to stock 21” in diameter. One would expect decent range out of these, but it’s cold.

These are both snow tires so they are soft and sticky.

What are external conditions? What are internal conditions? There are at least 5 of each that greatly effect efficiency and range.

I’ve driven the following twice this winter: Dual Max w/275R60-20 Haka R5s 237mi : from Bay Area 344’ el up and over 7,000’. Temps in high 40s low 50s 1st half, 30s in the mtns; 3 passenger + dog and minimal luggage. Going up to Tahoe uses 88% door to door @ 68-70mph on I80. Going home, same roads, similar temps, similar speeds (and descending from 7000), get home having used 76%.

Absolutely, and these are just the aggregates across the season. Electrafi does log HVAC (at least for Teslas) external temperature and elevation change. I could do the analysis but I suspect I won’t have much data once I break it down by uphill/downhill, exterior temps and speed.

I think it would be fun to break it down by trip; most trips aren’t at the max speed. Average speed is usually much less.

I just broke it down for trips over 100 miles and the range at 55-60 MPH (the fastest bucket for which I have data) is 221 miles in the R1T. I don’t know whether that bucket represents the average speed over the entire trip (over 100 miles), or a set of small samples in the trip where I happened to be going that speed. Since I have nothing above 60 MPH I assume it’s the former.

I’ve been doing 186 miles in a quad R1S with Nokian Hakka LT3s from MA to VT every weekend, charging to 100% and arriving pretty consistent with around 35 miles of range. Temps have been cold though, under 20F the whole way and close to 0 at times.

This was almost exactly my experience before I upgraded to the Dual Max. The upgrade added only a small amount of range, but it was critical for opening up new winter destinations.

Is your destination in VT net uphill for you? That can really hurt range.

Yea sea level to about 1400ft but also a small gap pass (Roxbury VT) and descent. But going VT to MA is only about 15 miles of range added.

However, we have friends with a gen 2 dual max R1S with 22” Hakkas who do the same trip and say they can leave with 80% and arrive with more than 10%. Maybe the heat pump?
