I have not seen any indication that Rivian has opened their platform to outside developers, have you? AFAIK every piece of software in the Rivian was written by Rivian, and given that is part of their secret sauce (just ask VW) I expect that to continue to be the case.
True, it’s a combo of Rivian needing to also release an sdk to app developers, then app developers making something that can run on Rivian’s OS, which I can’t see anyone wanting to bother with at this point. Spotify & the like can be integrated half assed since Rivian is just pulling data via api but even those will be inferior to their respective native apps.

I would encourage everyone who misses CarPlay to just buy and mount a secondary CarPlay screen (like Carpodgo) and liberate yourself from Rivian’s proprietary system, which seeks to lock you in, charge you money, is a hassle, and just plain sucks. So many bugs. Life is too short to not have all the working apps and settings you already use on a daily basis. And it’s 5G, soon to be 6G. With the next release Apple will offer satellite texting, which will be great for outdoor adventuring.

Good lord, the amount of armchair software engineers in this thread is staggering.

"It's not that hard to integrate"
"Just don't have CarPlay go over X"

lol, ok.

Can't type in an address on the screen while in drive.
Can't use my phone while in drive.
Slow to connect between the phone and car every time you get in (and based on my experience in rental cars, it randomly fails to connect and then there's no maps/GUI for minutes to start the drive)

I don't want to be fighting with my car/phone when I'm in my car, so I would never use Carplay/Android Auto. I honestly won't even connect it in rental cars now because of the limitations and connection issues.

I don't find myself particularly missing CP but would argue strongly with anyone that this is a question about CHOICE. How many more posts do we have to endure that "I don't need it so you shouldn't either?" Is there really a void of empathy so large that people can't understand that others may want something different than they do? If you don't use CP/AA why do you care? Why are you even on this thread? Regardless, have a great day everyone!

Some of us are on this thread because RJ has repeated for the Nth time that they will not be implementing CarPlay. I don't use CarPlay and I don't have anything against people who like/want CarPlay - I get that ..... but I support Rivian's right to make a business decision and stick to it.

Well, it is just not true to imply that he has always stated they will NEVER be implementing CP/AA. https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/04...st-adopting-apple-carplay-you-have-to-control

This is just a year ago when he stated that they might add CP/AA with enough customer demand. He just started saying they will not add CP/AA 4 DAYS ago. So you have to acknowledge that many users have been holding onto the POSSIBILITY they might add CP/AA and are trying to give him "enough customer demand". It seems increasingly obvious this isn't going to happen but to imply that customers are ignorant to what RJ has stated historically is factually incorrect.

You need to verify Benzinga's claim that he said this back in April 23. Yes, the benzinga.com post claims he said that. But.... did you actually listen to the entire Waveform MKBHD podcast? I listened to it back then when it went live in April 23, and again just now. Unless I am missing something, RJ never said that in that podcast. Feel free to correct me by pointing to the precise location in the YouTube video that was referenced by Benzinga. If you can show where he said it, I'll gladly eat crow. Just give me some salt to go with it, lol.

For quick reference, here is where they discuss CarPlay, and i hear nothing after that segment where RJ says anything else about CP.

I believe this statement in the Benzinga article is a corruption/misattribution that goes back to a 2021 Electrek article when an unnamed Rivian spokesperson (and not attributed to RJ) made the statement it might be supported in the future. This has happened more than once over the years where an uniformed/unqualified guide or SC person claimed CP was coming. RJ has always been very clear that it is not coming as far as I know.

I’ve never missed Carplay when driving my Tesla, but that’s because the Tesla UI user experience is better in the sense that everything is fully integrated, rather than the Apple iOS hijacking the screen. Also, in the Tesla I am using autopilot or FSD for Nav. I’ll tell you what though, using the Tesla Nav and drinking driving manually is not that great. It doesnt show what lane I need to be in the exit properly. So yes my comment is a bit conflicted.

Rivian on the other hand has some work to do. It desperately needs a good voice dictation as the user input, like Tesla has. And of course text message dictation.

Fun experience this week with my R1S.

We went took a trip to Boston but part of our trip was on the Orient Point ferry. This saves you an hour or so of driving as you go from Long Island to Connecticut. When we got to CT it took about 10 minutes for the Rivian navigation to realize we were no longer on Long Island but in Connecticut. However my iPhone was back on track within a few seconds. Not a big deal but annoying.

On the way back though it was much worse. Got off the ferry and the R1S thought I was in Connecticut, iPhone was right on target with my location. For about 40 minutes of driving the R1S thought I was driving through the hills of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Out of no where it suddenly realizes I am on Long Island and starts working again.

Good thing I knew where I was going but come on already. If Apple and Google can do it but Rivian can't then allow us the option to use CarPlay. What everyone forgets is CarPlay isn't required it's an option and this week I wanted that choice, normally I don't care.

Hopefully now people will stop asking for CarPlay. It's not going to be added end of story.

Frankly I don't want my Rivian's user interface to look like my iPad/iPhone. I want it to be unique and not like Honda's or Chevy's. Rivian does has some more work to do on their's, and I'm excited to see the new updates!

When I purchased a Tesla (my wife’s car now) it did not have CarPlay. Many Tesla owners complained about it for years. Third party adapters became available that allow CarPlay to display on the Tesla screen. This was the only way to integrate it and it worked. Maybe a solution will come to Rivian.

So your complaint is that the stock UI is buggy and doesn't work and your recommendation it to, install a half-assed system that is significantly worse than the stock UI just have Temu Carplay? Those half-baked CarPlay kits are absolutely terrible lol.

CarPlay has literallynothing to do with 5g or 6g. Those are variations in hardware, nothing to do with CarPlay. If you have a 5g phone, you have a 5g phone. Just because 6g will utilize the existing infrastructure, it does not mean your phone will be backwards compatible. The end.

North American 5g saturation is not even at 70%, so I think you're going to be waiting a while for 6g. Also, Apple satellite texting(e.g. the SOS system) is not a random text service you use in the car at a whim. You have to first answer a questionnaire and literally be pointing the phone in the direction of satellites.

Sigh. Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, Rivian, etc etc, ALL use the same satellites. Literally. So, I'm having a hard time believing that Rivian didn't know where you were, but Apple did when the location mechanism is 100% the same.

Most likely it was a software glitch that prevented the car UI from updating. Why people keep ignoring that Apple Maps was unusable up until the past year when launching 12 years ago is beyond me. CarPlay was also an unmitigated disaster early on. It takes time, people need to have some patience.
