Live in Washington but Florida resident. Because of this I register my own vehicle through a special milpak found on Florida's dmv website. Just curious if any other members have been able to do this by their guide. Just got my 8 steps and of course my guide is out of office until 17th. Appreciate any help. Can't wait to get my S!

Ahoy, sailor!

What county in Florida? Pinellas County Tax Collector made it incredibly easy and responded to my online form/request within a day with a list of everything needed. They do the registration for you with limited Power of Attorney after you fill out the right forms and mail everything in, including the Milpak.

Request the Manufacturer Certificate of Origin from Rivian and tell them you'll register yourself, their 3rd party registration company is terrible at multi-state transactions. Rivian will also either credit or deduct the title/registration fee.

Panther plate for life! ??

Awesome news thank you! Resident of Clay county but just due to last rental we had there. I am glad they have some experience at letting us do it ourself as my guide had no real clue when I brought it up 2 months ago. I'll hit you up if I run into any issues once a guide reaches back out. Thanks again

Let me know if they hassle you, we'll straighten them out ?. Also tell your guide to talk to Scott P for guidance if necessary, he was mine for my truck a year ago and is still for my wife's R1S. He was really helpful getting the MCO.

Just curious, what's the advantage of doing the registration yourself? We're stationed in DC but are Georgia residents, but I always just let the dealership handle registering our vehicles down there. Rivian can do the same.

Rivian doesn't do it, they outsource. And that company is trash for normal situations, let alone complicated.

Doing it yourself gets it done faster and ensures it's done right in your home of residency. When I presented Rivian with my situation of buying in Illinois with delivery to Washington and registration in Florida, they initially said no, they can't do that, only Washington. I pushed back and the third party said they'd "figure it out." A professional takes it and does it, a schlep like me "figures it out."

So after a month of crickets from the 3rd party, I requested the MCO and they sent me one to do it myself. I got it done in under a month.

Nope. My Guide denied me. told him im military and said my HOR is not here in California. Alas he said california requires it. So i really enjoyed giving california $3k in sales tax and $800 in annual vehicle registrations. Its also going to be an absolute blast explaining to police why i have an out of state license and an in state plates. I guess ill get it fixed next year before renewal. Get the MP to sign the vin verification form and go to a dmv next time i visit.

That's crap, I'm sorry they didn't hand it over on first request. MCO is totally an option, they can't require you to use their titling company. I had the same argument with a local dealer over the F150 Lightning, said I'm not titling in WA and will do it myself.

I worked in the auto sales industry in college, I know how much a PITA these folks can be and how hard you have to push back. Cite state laws and give them your plan, they usually give in after the third push.

IRT local yokels jamming you for license/tag mismatch, I had that here too. Again, cite state laws, show your CAC, and they *hmph* at you and let you go usually. Last dude really didn't like me saying, "Because I don't have to. Check your own laws." Gave me a couple BS tickets and the judge threw them out in court.

Your guide was wrong and you screwed yourself by letting him screw you.

Rivian managed to register mine out of state but it wasn’t without some hassle.

Tagging for that day I get told to start the 8 steps. Living/stationed in UT, resident of FL. Hopefully Rivian is as easy as you say. When I got my Tesla I had to take delivery in NV because the local Tesla shop didn't think it was possible to self-register, especially in a state I dont live in. I had experience buying a new vehicle when I was stationed in NV and was familiar with the rules there. Turned out the Vegas Tesla shop had a person familiar with out-of-state military purchases, how to update the paperwork/remove the sales tax and issue a temp drive-away tag. Worse case I fly down to Vegas to get the R1S, too, and have a little mini vacation I guess.

Yes, kind of. Want a veteran plate here in OR they said they won’t process. Asked DMV about ways I could file in parallel. Finally my guide got approval from higher to let me self register.

I did this dance last time I bought a car. Took delivery in MT, registered and transferred a plate from HOR, WA, while I was stationed in San Diego. By the time I drove the car back to San Diego tags and registration were in the mailbox.

Rivian wouldn’t just give me the MCO when I requested it but did manage to eventually get the truck registered. They then shipped the plates and title to the wrong address in the wrong state which was a whole other mess but yes, they were able to do it. I still prefer doing it myself and typically have the dealers give me the MCO to simplify the process.

Just picked up today in Cali. I have DV plates from my Tundra trade-in, asked my guide about transferring plates he said no problem treating it as a custom plate so we will see what happens. But from what i understand about the registration process for vets with DV plates I still need to take the plates to the dmv for verification.

This must be a guide ignorance thing, I'm pretty sure any company/dealer can't refuse to give it to you, they can just make it a pain and drag out your request, or resist a couple times. Rivian was great about giving to me when I asked, no problem.

I had an issue getting MCO from local Ford dealer for the Lightning, I eventually talked to the manager after pushing back a couple times and he hooked me up with the accountant/backroom guy. Once I got to him, it was smooth sailing. If you know what you're talking about, the non-sales people actually show some respect and don't treat YOU like the product.
