I have had my R1S for ten days. All has been well with no big problems. Yesterday, I could not get the R1S out of Park. I kept getting the message that I need to step on the brake to shift into gear. I also got occasional messages telling me how to go into neutral, which I was not trying to do. I tried applying the brake, like I do every time I drive it but it did nothing. I had been driving for a while and had pulled up to, and stopped at my mailbox to get the mail without getting out of the car. I stepped on the brake perhaps 20 times and then one time it just worked!

I live in the mountains, so everyone here has their mailboxes at a location in a long row. So I had pulled close to the mailbox. That meant I could not open my door to get out the drivers side, and that I was blocking my neighbors from getting their mail.

I read an old thread that suggested walking away from the car and coming back in a half hour. Since that was old, i am wondering if anyone else has experienced this in recent times and if they know of a fix. Hopefully a one time occurrence. I have been really enjoying the Rivian and living on the top of a mountain it is right at home!

Just curious, did you have your seat belt on? Was the driver's door closed all the way? Might be a factor but on the face of it, this does seems abnormal.

Any error messages? This sounds similar to what happened to me except that I was getting an error saying “service park brake system immediately.” My R1T is in the shop now for the second time with this problem, this time getting a brake caliper and a brake system harness replaced. I would definitely open a ticket. See this post for my experience.

I think I would’ve just tried doing a reset with the buttons on the steering wheel. That seems to fix any little tiny issues that I’ve ever had in the six months I’ve owned mine.

Happened to me a couple of weeks ago (I have about 6,000 on my R1S). Rebooted and it was fine. Not the first time I have had an anomaly which a quick reboot fixed...
