R1S updated estimated delivery window email (received June 11)

Orig. Apirl/May with signed BPA. Now to Oct/Dec. changed to BM from ocean after knowing ocean was delayed to fall. Has anyone with ocean got the new estimate? If so what are your dates? If ocean is still good for fall, I might switch it back. Thanks

Earliest R1S window I’ve seen is Aug/Sept. My LE R1S, ordered in 12/19, slipped from June-July to October-December.

I am going to give a very unpopular opinion, so buckle up

Rivian needs to scrap or delay the launch of the R1S and just focus on the R1T as their flagship vehicle for the near future, while working on the EDV to fulfil the Amazon commitment.

They need to follow the success of another pandemic EV startup, Polestar, who has delivered close to 30K vehicles globally just in 2021, and projecting 50K vehicles for 2022, just by focusing on a single vehicle.

Once they have gained momentum, market share and get their supply chain issues in order, they can introduce the S with more current technologies compared to the underwhelming vehicle it will be in 2023/2024. They can even pair it with their R2 launch as midsize and full-size pairings. They also will need to get the RAN DCFC network up and running and losing the R1S will enable them to focus on that network.

Rivian has consistently shown they are unable to manage their supply chain requirements and vendors, scale up production and delivery of vehicles, and we all know, and I guarantee this delay will not be the last. They are just not able to manage the manufacturing of three vehicles and might not even survive the next 2 - 3 years if they keep delaying launches and keep missing targets.

The market will definitely react to this news tomorrow. There is a reason why they waited till the weekend to announce this delay without announcing the delay, to soften the blow.

Rivian will have to focus on the T and forget the S for now.

Polestar is NOT a pandemic startup. Polestar was established in 1996 went through a lot of iterations and worked alongside Volvo to engineer vehicles in partnership with Volvo starting in 2009. They had production Volvos in 2013 and production Polestars in 2017. Volvo acquired them wholly in 2015, prior to them going into independent vehicle production. Additionally, they have had 2 production models since 2019 and just added Polestar 3 late last year and will be available supposedly in October. So if Rivian was building batteries, software and other components for Ford, Volkswagen or someone else, they would be further ahead then they are. If Ford bought them out and handed them the keys to all things vehicle production, Rivian could be like Polestar, but they are surpassing the speed and numbers that Polestar had at the same time, plus they did it in a pandemic. Polestar also had previously announced the goal for 2022 was to sell 65k vehicle this year but cut it to 50k because of the same issues Rivian and everyone else is dealing with. You are also suggesting that Rivian delays about 45% of their consumer pre order product? What would preclude them from building both side by side as they have planned? Suspension, batteries and most of the components are the same only body and interior configurations are truly different.

I preordered the R1S immediately after the LE window closed. I was originally Oct-Dec and have not heard anything. I expect to be in the next wave of emails after the LE people have all been contacted. I am currently shopping for something else in case the news is as bad as I expect it to be.
