Yes call the local PD to notify them. They put a sticker on the truck, but I know at least in California those CHP stickers only give you 4 hours.

Rivian needs a proper limp mode where they can cycle thru each motor and determine which one is healthy and working and then just put the rest of the motors in Neutral (disconnect etc). so it can be 1/2wd just to get emergency home or something along those lines.

Is it as simple as just replacing the motor?
I had a motor failure on my Model S. If it's similar, it is pretty straight forward to replace - assuming they have them in stock. Definitely the downside of the Quad motor design - more complicated design and 2 more possibilities for catastrophic failure. I would have preferred the dual motor option but didn't want to wait.

In regards to expectations for rental etc - they probably won't have a loaner for you and they'll probably give you uber credits. In my experience if they give you a rental car, they will not reimburse you for gas.

Sorry to hear about your experience and hope you get it fixed quickly!

(This is the reason I'm holding on to my 4Runner for a few years of overlap with the R1T. )

The 1st towing agency canceled the job and now we are back waiting for a tow. Its going on over 6 hrs and my truck is still on the side of the road. I asked if I should call the police department and he didn't know. I'm afraid it will be towed to an impound lot or something.
Do they have to put it in a certain mode before they can tow it? I know a Tesla that was pushed out of the road with screeching locked tires and because 12 battery died after waiting for couple of hours, they couldn’t do anything with it.

Time to use that 7day/1,000 gurantee btw... lol

I heard from guide this morning. No loaner available and the SC claims to not have received the truck when my app says otherwise. Not thrilled with the track record and all of the problems getting a to yesterday and getting calls past midnight.

Yes. The car has to be in neutral and put in tow mode. That's why they need they nfc card I belive. I asked about the return policy, he said it would take weeks for them to return the full purchase price and it only sounds like I can get a new truck if the repairs are excessive. I will try to push for that no matter what the repairs are. But that has not been a smooth process.

? I hope it's not the drive unit. It felt like the vibration was coming from both sides. The truck still hasn't been picked up either by the tow truck....a little nervous. It's been almost 4 hours now.
Purely an FYI when my R1T had to be towed they went through 4-5 towing services before they found one who would do it. Tow companies HATE EVs in my experience.

EDIT: Tow truck DRIVERS hate EVs ;)

Yes - I haven't gotten mine yet but I already printed the tow operator guide to have in the truck at all times. It's going to be a few years before you can assume the tow truck driver will know how to handle this vehicle when they arrive on scene and you want to make sure they do things right.

I am sure part of it is that there is not enough of them out there but I still feel like EVs are not designed for “in sickness and health” kinda relationships. They are just for good times. If reset doesn’t work, things can get interesting.

Yeah, not sure who to reach out to that is above my guide. This has to be such a rare failure...i mean within 350 miles and it failed. I just feel they should be doing more to get me a loaner and not having to tell them...no my truck was actually delivered. I would love to contact someone above my guide

For what it’s worth… I sent an email to RJ a few months back with some concerns and questions — he replied a day later answering some of my email and thanking me for reaching out.

The point being, if you haven’t already, email the Sr Staff including RJ and let them know of your situation in a very polite and professional way… you may be surprised and get some better traction. Pun intended ?
