This week we had an opportunity to take a road trip from Seattle, down the Oregon Coast and to Northern California (Mendocino), a trip of about 1500 miles return. As it happens we were able to do the route using the RAN so I had multiple opportunities at different RAN locations along the way to see how that network performed. The stations that we stopped at in Oregon were Lincoln City and Coos Bay. The stations that we stopped at in California were in Crescent City and Fortuna.
The charging experience was exceptional. Plug and play and never had any issues whatsoever. Peak charging around 215 ish and stayed above 140 for a good part of the charge (seemed better in that regard than other non-Rivian chargers we've been to in the past) If this is the future of the charging experience for Rivian's I like what I'm seeing.
The locations were thoughtfully selected in each case and near to stores/restaurants that you could pass the time in while waiting to charge. The Lincoln City location is next to a major factory outlet. The Coos Bay location is in a new retail location that is still being built up but looks promising (there is a Starbucks nearby and will ultimately be several restaurants) The Crescent City and Fortuna locations are near malls so there are grocery stores and food options nearby.
The layout of each of these charging stops was far better than most EA's I've been to and they were easily accessible. A number of them had pull through charging stations if you had a trailer. The cords could have been a little longer but wasn't a huge issue by any means. As it happens the electrons were free on the RAN at this time so that was a nice bonus for the trip.
We did manage to get caught in a rare winter snowstorm during the California leg of the journey and the Rivian acquitted itself admirably (R1S with 22 inch tires). I continue to be impressed at how this vehicle seamlessly transitions from highway driving, to windy roads, to challenging conditions. There were quite a few cars in the ditch during the snowy/windy sections through the Redwood Forest and the Rivian really didn't have any problems.
Strongly recommend this drive for those of you who have the time (you can skip the Seattle to Portland part) as it has so many beautiful coastal views, punctuated by some fantastic arboreal scenery (especially through the Redwoods). Great job to Rivian on the early stages of the RAN.
10,000 miles into ownership of our R1S and I'm continuing to like the vehicle more, not less.
