I have only seen one picture of the R1S from the top without items on the roof rack, and it's difficult to tell if the sunroof can open. Does anyone know?

I have yet to see any reference in an article or video that mentions or shows that the glass roof can open, for either the R1S or R1T. From looking at some R1T pics the glass (sun?) roof "might" be able to pop-up, but it's very hard to tell. As for the R1S, I doubt it but that's not to say Rivian hasn't come up with a clever way to do it. Perhaps forum members who have seen either EAV in person at a Rivian attended event might have some insights.

I've seen both in person. Both pre-production units (only 2 exist) have all glass electro-chromatic roof option installed. Recently revealed at the Overland Expo, there will be a removable roof option for the R1T! No other word on sun/moon roof options, but the current all glass roof (as shown above) does not open.

The trend recently has been towards fixed glass roofs over sliding moon roofs, especially in higher end electric vehicles. Tesla no longer offers an opening roof, and neither does the I-Pace or e-tron.

I for one have had sliding roofs on many cars and will not have another. Usually forget they are there and just find them a problem waiting to happen. Why have a hepa filter in a car and throw open the roof. Maybe i;m not the norm but rarely open a window.

At the Atlanta event, the employees confirmed that the show car had the electrochromic roof. It definitely does not appear to open

I for one am bummed the glass roof is fixed. I feel like sunroofs are a great solution for those who don’t want the full sun exposure of a convertible.

Plus have you ever carpooled a bunch of teenagers after a heavy sports practice? The car is just stuffy at best and reeks at worst. The slightly open sunroof has saved me many a times because being in the PNW where it rains from December to May, rolling down windows for fresh air with a car full of smelly boys isn’t ideal. A well designed sunroof allows for ventilation - but not too much and a slightly open sunroof keeps the water out on lightly raining days.

So I’m giving up the practical functionality of a sunroof in order to have the R1S. Guess the kids better start wearing more deodorant.

FWIW, Rivian will be offering 4 types of roofs. Solid and fixed (standard), glass, removable panels, and the electrochromatic. I was told at the public event in Normal, IL this past Sunday that all four roof features/options will be available for both the R1T and R1S. Also, the removable panels will fit in the gear tunnel (R1T) or cargo area (R1S).
